“We haven’t got time to dwell on it” – Wolfsburg match reaction

We gathered the thoughts of the players and coaches after Borussia’s 1-1 draw with VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday night.

Yann Sommer: It’s a frustrating result. We played well for long periods. We were the better team in the first half, although Wolfsburg came out of the interval well and carried more of a threat. We couldn’t find the space in the second half. It’s really frustrating to have led 1-0 at home and ended up conceded an unfortunate goal. The ball just dropped at Wout Weghorst’s feet and he didn’t think twice about shooting. We haven’t started the season as we had hoped, but there’s no use in crying about it. We will take the point. Now it’s off to Milan for our first Champions League game, so we haven’t got time to dwell on today’s game.

Matthias Ginter: We’re not happy with the result. We started well and had a number of decent chances in the first half. Wolfsburg came out stronger after the break. 1-1 is a fair enough result, but we’re obviously not happy with a point. We were a little disappointed for it to still be 0-0 at half time. Maybe one or two of us thought that the game would just carry on like it was in the first half, but we knew that Wolfsburg are a good side and will challenge us physically. We wanted to maintain our defensive stability in the second 45 and try and create a little more going forward, but it didn’t quite happen. Wolfsburg played well in the second half and we probably lacked some physicality in the challenges. We also lost the ball too easily.

Marco Rose: We were on top in the first half and were getting shots away, which is what brings games to life. Wolfsburg improved after the break, so you have to say that a draw is a fair result. It was a high-intensity game and little things made the difference as to whether you control phases of the game or not. The fact of the matter is, however, that we took the lead and then we need to get that 1-0 advantage over the line. We’re now looking forward to the run of games we’ve got ahead of us.

VfL Wolfsburg head coach Oliver Glasner: We started alright but then we struggled a little after the first 15 or 20 minutes. Gladbach had two or three good chances from long balls, which was something we had discussed before the game. Borussia are good at holding the ball up and we didn’t deal with it well. We failed to do the same at the other end too. Our second-half performance was very good though. We were unlucky to concede the penalty against the run of play, but the team responded brilliantly and fully deserved the equaliser. I’m happy with the performance and 1-1 is a fair result.
