Facts and stats ahead of #BMGRMA

Get all the important facts and stats ahead of Real Madrid’s visit in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night (21:00 CET).

Spectators:

  • The Foals will have to play their first Champions League home game of the season behind closed doors. That’s in line with the instructions of the local authorities after the local infection rate, which states how many new infections have been recorded per 100,000 people in the last seven days, climbed to 94.2 in Mönchengladbach.

Record between Borussia and Real Madrid:

  • The record between the Foals and The Galacticos is an even one. Of the four games to be played between the sides so far, each has recorded one victory with two of the matches drawn; the Spaniards progressed to the next round on both of these occasions.
  • The last meeting was 35 years ago, and it was a memorable occasion in the third round of the UEFA Cup in 1985/86. Borussia won the first leg 5-1 in Düsseldorf, but Real were able to turn it around, winning their home leg 4-0. Santillana scored the goal to complete the turnaround in the 88th minute. A side has only turned round a four-goal deficit from the first leg four other times in UEFA club competition history.
  • Real were able to progress thanks to the away goals rule, and that also helped them in the first meeting between the sides in the quarter-finals of the European Cup in 1975/76 (2-2 away, 1-1 at home). Referee Leonardus van der Kroft was in the spotlight on that occasion, with some questionable decisions making things difficult for Borussia in the second leg.

Statistics:

  • Borussia are unbeaten in five competitive games – two wins and two draws in the Bundesliga, as well as a 2-2 draw against Inter Milan in the Champions League.
  • The Foals have won two of their last four games in European competition, but they only have three wins from their last 14 (seven draws, four defeats).
  • The 2-1 win against AS Roma on Matchday 4 of last season’s UEFA Europa League is Borussia’s only home win in their last eight home matches in Europe (three draws, four defeats).
  • Mönchengladbach lost 2-1 and 4-0 to FC Barcelona in the group stage of the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League. That was the last time the club faced Spanish opposition.
  • The 4-2 win at home to Sevilla in the 2015/16 group stage is Borussia’s only win in their last eleven games against Spanish sides (two draws, eight defeats).
  • Real have won the competition 13 times, and this is their 51st appearance in a European Cup competition. No side has appeared more often.
  • Real reached the semi-finals eight times in a row between 2010/11 and 2017/18. They have gone out in the quarter-finals in the last two seasons, however.
  • The Spaniards have won just one of their last five UEFA Champions League games (one draw, three defeats).
  • Real have won 16 of their last 26 away fixtures in Europe.
  • The Spanish champions have been victorious on their last three trips to Germany, the last occasion being a 2-1 win in the first leg of their semi-final against Bayern Munich in 2017/18. Their full record in Germany: seven wins, seven draws, 19 defeats.

Referee:

  • Israeli referee Orel Grinfeld is in charge on Tuesday night. The 39-year-old has been a FIFA-licensed referee since 2012 and has officiated five Champions League games to date. He has not yet been in charge of a game involving the Foals.
  • Grinfeld will be assisted by fellow countrymen Roy Hassan and Idan Yarkoni. The fourth official is Gal Leibovitz, and Portuguese referee João Pinheiro is in charge of VAR.
