“A painful result” - Leverkusen match reaction

We gathered the thoughts from the players and coaches after Borussia’s 4-3 loss to Leverkusen on Sunday.

Valentino Lazaro: So soon after the game, it’s hard to be happy about my goal. I just tried to get into the box and saw that the cross was a little behind me, but I didn’t think that I would actually make that contact and find the back of the net. That was my third cameo appearance now and I’m working hard to get to 100 percent. I came in today to try and help the side and I’m happy that I was able to contribute with a goal, but it’s a shame that we didn’t get a result. We weren’t the better team today; Leverkusen played very well. Nevertheless, we had plenty of chances, led twice and missed some great opportunities. That’s why it’s such a painful result and a real pity that we couldn’t round off these remarkable few weeks with a win.

Yann Sommer: It was a difficult evening for us, but we were up against a good opponent. Leverkusen controlled much of the game, but we still had our moments and scored our goals at the right time. Sadly, we missed the chance to go 3-2 ahead and ended up going behind soon after instead. Their second goal was a little unfortunate – I came out, but the cross dipped quicker than I anticipated. We made too many mistakes today and that’s why we didn’t come away with any points.

Marco Rose: Leverkusen deserved to win today. We didn’t get enough of a grip on the game in the first half – our opponents were more on-the-ball. Nevertheless, we ended up going ahead twice, although Leverkusen got two equalisers. The match was a little calmer after the break and then we ended up going behind from a counterattack. It was a little chaotic again at the end. I think we had the better chances today on the whole. It’s frustrating to go into the international break off the back of a result like that, but the lads have worked incredibly hard these past weeks. This game is proof that you can’t afford to drop off even a little bit in the Bundesliga.

Leverkusen head coach Peter Bosz: The game was a real spectacle for the neutrals no doubt. My team played very well against a top side. We knew that we would have to be strong from the very beginning to have a chance, and we started well. I just told the lads to keep doing what they had been doing in the second half. Lukas Hradecky also made some great saves and Gladbach missed a couple of chances. I think we deserved to win today and I’m proud of my players.
