Rose: “We will give as good as we get against Inter”

Head coach Marco Rose and midfielder Florian Neuhaus spoke to the media in a virtual press conference from BORUSSIA-PARK on Monday afternoon, answering questions about tomorrow’s UEFA Champions League meeting with Inter Milan (21:00 CET kick-off).

Marco Rose on…

Borussia’s situation: We need to play some really good football tomorrow, and we’re up against a top side who have their backs to the wall. Inter know that they have to win their last two games to go through, and that makes it tougher for us. Nevertheless, we will take on the challenge full of confidence and will give Inter as good as we get. We have our principles, both on and off the ball, and we will stick to them. The aim is to put in a good performance and get the necessary points.

...team news: It was important that Tony Jantschke could get into a rhythm on Saturday. We’re lucky in that respect at Nico Elvedi picked up a minor muscle injury in training and will miss the game against Inter. Tony will step up again. Otherwise, there are no personnel updates.

Inter danger man Romelu Lukaku: Romelu Lukaku is a very tidy player with a great character. He has a big influence on the way Inter play, which is testament to how important he is for them. He comes to life in the box. He’s very strong physically, has a decent amount of pace and has a real eye for goal.

Lars Stindl: Lars fulfils his role as captain magnificently. He enjoys a high standing at the club, one he has earned over his years here. He is an important player in the dressing room, as well as on the pitch. Lars leads by example, works hard for the team, scores goals and provides assist, so he’s a very important player for us.

Florian Neuhaus on

Borussia’s situation: We showed what we’re capable of in the first four Champions League games and we want to do the same tomorrow. It would be something special to reach the knockouts, not just for me but for the whole club, and we will do everything we can to make that happen.

...history: The name Roberto Boninsegna isn’t one I’m overly familiar with but I of course know about the infamous 7-1 win and the story of the Coke can. That’s something you’re bound to hear about in the build-up to a game like this. Once you’re on the pitch, however, history means nothing. All you can do then is give everything to win the game.

...Inter’s quality: It’s not just Romelu Lukaku who has tremendous quality, but the whole team. It will be a huge challenge, but we wanted to play against the best teams in Europe, so we’re really looking forward to the game.

...physical strain: I’m still a young player and feel good on a physical level – the busy schedule is giving me good rhythm. And to be honest, I much prefer playing to training (laughs). I don’t worry about the physical strain either, I just want to play football and give it all I’ve got.

...his performance this calendar year: This year’s gone really well for me so far and I want to end it in the same way. Moving me to defensive midfield was definitely one of the reasons for this. I can play to my strengths even more there. Another reason is that I’m enjoying my football a lot and I enjoy playing for Borussia. When the team is successful, every individual benefits from it.

...his potential: Mistakes are part of the game. I know I do a lot of things well, but there are also things I don’t do particularly well. There are always things you can work on, so I always listen to criticism and try to do things better in the next game and generally improve all the time.
