  • As part of the current pandemic measures introduced by the federal and state governments, professional sporting events must take place without spectators.

Head-to-head record between Bielefeld and Borussia

  • It’s the 31st Bundesliga meeting between Arminia and The Foals. Borussia have a better record against Bielefeld than they do against any other Bundesliga side: 19 wins, six draws, and five losses.
  • The last time Arminia beat Borussia was a 4-1 victory in March 2003 (Momo Diabang scored a hat-trick). Bielefeld have picked up just two points from the eight games between the two sides since.
  • Bielefeld have failed to score a home goal against Borussia in the 18 years since the victory mentioned above (first a 0-0, then three 2-0 defeats in a row).
  • The last time the two sides met was in the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal in April 2015, when the then-third-division Arminia surprisingly knocked Borussia out. The score was level at 1-1 after 120 minutes, with Bielefeld winning 5-4 on penalties.

Statistics – in partnership with UNIBET

  • Borussia have never played a Bundesliga game so early in the year. There have been several competitive games on 2nd January, including the DFB-Pokal qualifying round in 1965/66. The Foals won the game 5-1 against Opel Rüsselsheim on 2nd January 1966. In 1923 and 1928, Borussia even had to play on New Year’s Day.
  • Borussia have won just one of their last seven Bundesliga games (4-1 against Schalke on MD9). The Foals are also currently winless in four Bundesliga games (most recently a 2-1 home defeat to Hoffenheim, three draws before that), the longest winless run the club have been on under Marco Rose. The last time Gladbach went on a longer winless run was over four years ago, in Autumn 2016 under Andre Schubert (8 games).
  • The Foals have been quite free scoring away from home recently, scoring at least two goals in each of their last five Bundesliga away games (scoring three goals on four occasions). The last time Borussia had an away scoring run of this type was in 1987, when The Foals scored at least two goals in six away games in a row (spanning multiple seasons).
  • Gladbach have scored a league-high 11 goals from set pieces this season (6 of those penalties). Bielefeld are at the other end of the list – they are the only Bundesliga side yet to score a goal from a set piece this season.
  • Bielefeld have scored the second-fewest goals in the Bundesliga this season (Schalke have the fewest), but their nine goals have won them 10 points. Lars Stindl alone has almost scored as many goals this season (8). In fact, the Borussia captain has scored as many goals as the whole Bielefeld squad this season, as one of their goals was an own goal.
  • The 1-0 win in the relegation six-pointer away at Schalke on MD13 was Bielefeld’s third win and first away win of the season. All three have come against relegation-threatened sides (the others were home wins against Köln and Mainz).
  • In 12 of Bielefeld’s 13 games this season, the team that scored the first goal has gone on to win the game. Arminia are yet to lose this season after going ahead (W3, D1), but are one of two sides (Mainz the other) yet to pick up any points after going behind in a game this season (L9).

Match officials

  • Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the DFB will not decide on the referee for the game until short notice.
