“We struggled to get going” - Union match reaction

We gathered the thoughts from the players and coaches after Borussia's 1-1 draw away at Union Berlin on Saturday afternoon.

Matthias Ginter: We weren’t set up properly from the free-kick for their goal. That made life much harder for us because Union dropped even deeper. There’s a reason that they haven’t conceded many goals so far this season; it’s not easy to get in behind them and we struggled to get going in the final third. We wanted to take three points home today, so I’m a little disappointed with the result. However, when you’re up against a side who set up like that, it’s very difficult to create the chances you need. The ones we did create, unfortunately we weren’t able to convert them into three points.

Nico Elvedi: We had certainly hoped for more today and would have been very happy with three points. We’ll take a point though as we knew how hard it would be here in Berlin. We actually played well I thought and hardly allowed Union any chances. We had a lot of possession, but we weren’t incisive enough in the final third. Their goal was a frustrating one to concede from a set-piece. We did well in the second half and could even have nicked a second goal at the end. In any case, we will look ahead. First up is the cup game in Stuttgart and we want to reach the next round.

Yann Sommer: It was a tough game against strong opposition. Union defended really well and it was tricky to find space and get behind their backline. We played well though and the only blip we had was from the free-kick for their goal. We knew that Union really whip in their set-pieces and they would be difficult to deal with. We should have defended it better, but ultimately we had chances to come back and get the win. Alassane Plea’s goal was really well taken. We have some exciting weeks ahead, but we will take each game as it comes.

Marco Rose: Even if you beat Union, you would always talk of a hard-fought victory. They simply don’t give away many clear-cut opportunities and you have to make the right decisions to make things happen. It was a typical Union Berlin game against a very organised opponent. We would have loved to have won and we gave it our all at the end there, but all in all, I think a draw is a fair result.

Union Berlin head coach Urs Fischer: I think my team put in a good performance today. Gladbach were a little bit better than us in the first half, but I think we gave them as good as we got in the second 45 and had the odd chance to score. If we had had a little more precision in and around the box, I think we could even have got the win. As it happens, it was a deserved draw and I think we can be pleased with ourselves.
