“We’re bitterly disappointed” - Köln match reaction

We gathered the thoughts from the players and coaches after Borussia’s 2-1 derby defeat to Köln.

Lars Stindl: It’s very frustrating that we were chasing an early deficit again, just like in the cup game in Stuttgart on Wednesday. We did manage to equalise fairly quickly, but we made life difficult for ourselves again straight after the break by going back behind. We had a lot more possession towards the end of the game and had the odd half-chance, but we ultimately, we weren’t incisive enough, particularly because Köln defended well. There were a number of small things that didn’t come together today, and that’s why we ended up losing. We’re bitterly disappointed, because we were determined to win the derby for our fans.

Marco Rose: Köln played and battled just like you need to in a derby. They got stuck in more than we did. My boys covered 120 kilometres, but we were too often second-best in the decisive areas. We also conceded two goals that shouldn’t be happening. The first one was another after a matter of minutes and in a situation where we had actually had the numbers to defend, but we didn’t pick up the run behind. We reacted well, but then we gifted Köln the ball for their second goal. We were chasing the game then and didn’t create many shooting opportunities. We piled the pressure on at the end, but our performance ultimately wasn’t good enough to win the game. I know these lads. This is the squad we have built and it’s one we have faith in. The lads have really made an impression in training. Tony Jantschke had a really good game today and more than justified his place in the team. There are a lot of principles when it comes to how we work, so the lads know what to expect in a match. I don’t think we lost today because of rotation. In part it was about the mindset, and Köln were better than us in that department. We also gifted them their goals. We were in a good position before the game. A win today would have been crucial, but we’ve missed that opportunity. It means that we will have to make up that ground somewhere along the line.

1. FC Köln head coach Markus Gisdol: We weren’t picking up enough points at the start of the season and we’ve been playing catch-up since then. That’s why it’s so important that we have been claiming points regularly lately. It was important that we were dominant in the challenges today. We knew that our opponents were looking for ways to draw us into a counterpress and then play through us, and we were determined not to let that happen. Our goal was to not allow them to press us and try and create counterattacking opportunities as quickly as possible. We didn’t do it perfectly, but well enough, and that’s why we deserved to get the win.
