Rose: “Playing with energy again!”

In the digital press conference ahead of the game away to VFL Wolfsburg, head coach Marco Rose and sporting director Max Eberl discussed the squad, the upcoming opponents and the current Bundesliga standings.

Head coach Marco Rose on…

…the squad: Denis Zakaria still hasn’t returned to team training. Zak trained alone yesterday but the bruise to his knee is still painful. We will have to wait and see how things develop for him. Tony Jantschke had to take the day off yesterday due to a thigh issue but he will be back with us today. Torben Müsel is still doing recovery work and Rocco Reitz has made a really good impression in training.

…this weekend’s opponents: Wolfsburg were knocked out of the Europa League at the start of the season, so a lot of questions were asked. Yet the team has kept working on things. The Wolves have a clear playing style which is based on an unbelievable willingness to run. Wolfsburg are the team that has completed the most sprints and intense runs and our players are aware of how good they are at that. But the way in which they play football is great too, whether that’s in a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-2-2-2. Overall, they’re on a great run of form and come into the game with plenty of momentum. They are delivering week in, week out and deserve to be up there in the table. We have always said that they are a team at the level that we want to be mixing it at. We have to stand firm, match their intensity and try to create things against a well-drilled Wolfsburg defence.

…Wolfsburg head coach Oliver Glasner: Oliver Glasner has a clear idea of how he wants to play, he stands for a particular style of football that is aggressive, intense and powerful. With the 4-2-3-1, he and his team have found the right system for them.

…the mood in camp following the derby loss to Köln: When you lose a derby everyone is gutted, above all the fans, and we’re well aware of that. What’s important now is that we keep looking forward and improve this weekend. That means showing a lot of energy out on the pitch. But I still believe that the starting XI against Köln was the right one. It was important for Ramy Bensebaini to rest after his time out with COVID-19 and Tony Jantschke did everything right. However, when you lose a match, there’s always reasons for that. It was a bad day at the office for everyone and we know it’s all the more bitter as it was against a close rival. Nevertheless, we have to move on now.

…upcoming games: Starting with the game against Mainz, we have a tough run of fixtures in front of us. After that we play Manchester City in the Champions League, who have won fifteen games in a row now, followed by Leipzig and then Borussia Dortmund in the DFB-Pokal. Finally we have Bayer 04 Leverkusen. We have to be careful not to lose too many players to injury or fatigue during this phase. In addition, we need to make sure we’re fresh enough on the pitch to get the results we need.

Sporting director Max Eberl on…

…the current Bundesliga table: We can all read the table and see the way that things currently stand. We were successful in seven Bundesliga matches and lost just one, and that fact shouldn’t be ignored. It’s not a bad run of form, we just lost one game, though it was one where the emotions were running particularly high. Every game sets a new trend in the Bundesliga, but it’s not conclusive because otherwise no team would have a chance in the next game. We’re going to Wolfsburg with the aim of winning, but we know that they, along with Frankfurt, are very much in-form at the minute and have a lot of quality in their side. We want to pick up points there and then it’s on to the next game. Our position in the table can change after each and every game. Alongside the league, it’s also important to note that we’re still in the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League, so we’re well on target.
