Facts and figures ahead of Manchester City clash

We bring you all the important facts and need-to-know information for the Champions League last 16 meeting with Manchester City on Wednesday evening (21:00 CET).

Stadium

  • Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic making travel to Germany impossible for British teams, the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 will take place at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest (Photo: imago images), instead of at BORUSSIA-PARK.

Attendance

  • Due to the pandemic, sporting events are currently unable to take place in front of crowds, meaning that the Champions League match against Man. City must take place behind closed doors.

Record between Borussia and Manchester City

  • Manchester City and Borussia have met six times in competitive games. The Citizens have the edge with three wins to Gladbach’s one. There have been two draws so far.
  • In 2015/16 and 2016/17, Borussia faced City in the Champions League group stage two years running. The Foals lost both matches in 2015/16, 2-1 and 4-2, before losing 4-0 in Manchester in 2016/17. Gladbach collected a point at home that season, however, drawing 1-1.
  • The only meeting between the clubs in a knock-out round came in the 1978/79 European Cup quarterfinals, when Borussia progressed to the semis thanks to a 1-1 draw and a 3-1 win in the return leg. The Foals would go on to lift the trophy at the end of the season.

 Statistics

  • The Foals are playing in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 for the first time in the club’s history.
  • VfL started the 2020/21 UCL campaign with a pair of 2-2 draws against Inter Milan and Real Madrid. Borussia then celebrated their largest ever away win in the Champions League, beating Shakhtar Donetsk 6-0 in Kiev and claiming top spot in the group. They followed that up with a 4-0 win at home to Shakhtar, Gladbach’s largest home win in the competition. The Foals progressed to the knock-out stages despite a 3-2 loss to Inter and a 2-0 defeat to Real to see out the group.
  • The Foals have won four of their last nine games in European competition (two draws, three defeats). Overall, VfL have come out on top in five of their last 19 fixtures (eight draws and six defeats).
  • Borussia will be playing only their second ever competitive game in Budapest and in Hungary as a whole. In the first round of the 1977/78 European Cup, the Foals won 3-0 away to Vasas Budapest. The match took place at the Népstadion, which was demolished in 2016 to make way for the new Puskás Aréna.
  • Manchester City were unbeaten in the previous round as they topped Group C. Pep Guardiola’s side collected 16 points and finished ahead of Porto (13), Olympiakos (3) and Olympique Marseille (3).
  • The Sky Blues are taking part in the UEFA Champions League for the tenth time. The team has been a permanent fixture among Europe’s elite since 2011/12.
  • City haven’t conceded a goal in 526 minutes in the UEFA Champions League. Luis Díaz of Porto scored the last European goal against them, all the way back in the 14th minute on matchday one.

Referee

  • The referee for the match will be Artur Dias. The 41-year-old Portuguese official has taken charge of 19 UCL matches in his career so far, although none of those games featured the Foals. A good omen, however, is that Dias was the referee for our legendary 4-2 against Fiorentina in the 2016/17 Europa League.
  • Dias will be assisted by his compatriots Rui Tavares and Bruno Rodrigues. Hugo Miguel (Portugal) will act as the fourth official. João Pinheiro (Portugal) and Massimiliano Irrati (Italy) will be in charge of VAR.
