“We couldn’t relieve the pressure” - Leipzig match reaction

We heard from the players and coaches from Borussia's 3-2 defeat to RB Leipzig on Saturday evening.

Yann Sommer: We weren’t able to see out the result. I thought they were the better team. Leipzig put us under constant pressure, especially in the second half. They put in lots of crosses and played balls from deep which put us under constant pressure. There was no relief from it and so we lost the game. The referee didn’t think the incident with Valentino Lazaro in the build-up to their third goal was a foul, but that’s just the way things are. I think our opponents gained an advantage from it, but we can’t change it now. We have to move on from the game, take the right conclusions from it and put in a good performance against Borussia Dortmund in the cup on Tuesday.

Marco Rose: It’s a real blow for the lads to lose it in stoppage time. Leipzig were obviously pushing hard in the second half, but I feel that we had battled hard and deserved a point. It would have been good to get the draw to help us in our current situation and just to give us a bit of a boost. We wanted to play with two physical players up top and get in behind. We lost our foothold in the game more and more as it went on though. We switched to a back-four because we felt that it would help us defensively and perhaps we could hold on to the ball more in attack with an extra body, but Leipzig played really well and at the end I think we just ran out of energy to keep up our resistance.

RB Leipzig head coach Julian Nagelsmann: I was really happy after the final whistle because it was a hard-earned win. We conceded twice in the opening stages and we defended really badly for both goals. After that we did well and forced Gladbach to play lots of long balls. Going forward, we had plenty of attacks that could have been dangerous, even in the first half. We played unbelievably well in the second half; we put a lot of pressure on, our gegenpressing was great and the substitutes made a huge impact on the game. In the end, we deserved to win because we never lost belief. It’s not easy to turn around a 2-0 deficit against a good Gladbach team. The win was really important in terms of the table. It was emotional and hopefully it will give us strength for the games to come.
