Voting now open for February Player of the Month

Lars Stindl, Tony Jantschke, Yann Sommer, and Christoph Kramer are up for February’s Player of the Month award, presented by Borussia and Cichon Personalmanagement. You can vote for your winner on the FohlenApp.

February saw the Foals play a total of six competitive matches, with four of those in the Bundesliga and one apiece in the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League. From these six games, four different players were voted Man of the Match. Lars Stindl was the fans’ choice on the FohlenApp in the 2-1 win over VfB Stuttgart in the round of 16 of the DFB-Pokal, while Tony Jantschke won the award in the following 2-1 defeat to 1. FC Köln in the Bundesliga. Yann Sommer picked up the majority of the vote in the 0-0 draw against VfL Wolfsburg in the league after the Swiss added to his clean sheet tally for the season. Stindl was once again voted Man of the Match on matchday 22 in the bitter 2-1 loss against FSV Mainz 05. Next up was the UEFA Champions League round of 16 clash in Budapest against Manchester City, with Foals fans awarding the title to Christoph Kramer as Borussia were beaten 2-0 by the Citizens. Finally, Sommer picked up his second Man of the Match award in the 3-2 loss to RB Leipzig to round off the month.

Lars Stindl: Lars Stindl won the Man of the Match award twice in February. Our captain led by example in the 2-1 win in the DFB-Pokal last 16. The 32-year-old worked his socks off and stood out with his short passing. On top of that, Stindl provided a clever assist to create the equaliser for Marcus Thuram. He picked up 30.25% of the votes to collect the Man of the Match award. He was also Man of the Match in the disappointing 2-1 loss to Mainz on Bundesliga matchday 22. The skipper played his 200th game for the Foals, working hard and delivering another solid performance.

Tony Jantschke: Jantschke started the home match against 1. FC Köln on matchday 20 of the Bundesliga. The 30-year-old was playing his 230th match in Gladbach colours, climbing ahead of the legendary Günter Netzer on the club’s list of record appearance-makers. He was as reliable as ever and put in a solid performance which earned Man of the Match recognition from the fans.

Yann Sommer: Borussia’s ‘keeper was also Man of the Match twice in February. Sommer was the clear winner after the goalless draw with Wolfsburg, picking up 55% of votes in a landslide victory. Our number one pulled out several big stops and was one of the main reasons Gladbach were able to hold on for a clean sheet. “We know that we can rely on Yann. He kept them out and that’s why he’s in goal,” said head coach Marco Rose after the game. Sommer also put in a good performance against RB Leipzig in the Foals’ last February fixture and made several good saves to keep Gladbach in the game until the very last. The Swiss was powerless to prevent any of the goals in the 3-2 defeat. Sommer again picked up over half the votes to take home Man of the Match for the second time.

Christoph Kramer: Kramer covered every blade of grass in the UEFA Champions League last 16 first leg against Manchester City, popping up all over the pitch to put out fires. But neither he nor his teammates were able to consistently impose the Foals’ attacking game on such quality opposition. “We tried to defend deep and we had some promising moments, especially in the second half. Unfortunately they got snuffed out pretty quickly,” said Kramer after the game, which was moved to Budapest due to the travel restrictions for English teams. Kramer won a tight Man of the Match race with 16% of votes.
