“We made a statement” - Frankfurt match reaction

We heard from Tobias Sippel and the two coaches after Borussia’s 4-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday afternoon.

Tobias Sippel: We were clinical with our chances today and were able to make a statement again as a result. Our playing style is usually to play out from the back, but we chose to play it long more often instead because we could target Marcus Thuram and later on Breel Embolo up front – it was easier to get the ball forward that way. We always knew that we would battle our way out of our crisis, and we never gave up faith. Once we won at Schalke, all the negative pressure was gone. We’re playing good football again now. We have achieved our goal for this matchday, but we want to try and climb up the table one game at a time. The aim is to kick on in the next weeks and see how far it gets us. I’m just enjoying every game I get to spend on the pitch. That’s why I play football - because I love it.

Marco Rose: It was a fantastic performance from my team. We defended very well and didn’t allow Frankfurt to play their game for the most part. They struggled to move the ball around quickly and link up in attack, which is what has made them so dangerous. We kept things tight at the back, closed off passing lanes and picked up their runs well. We were also a handful at the other end. We started strongly and took the lead through a set piece. That put us in good stead and we continued to defend well and looked a threat on the counter, which was an important factor in us getting all three points. Now it’s about taking this momentum into Wednesday’s game at Hoffenheim.

Frankfurt head coach Adi Hütter: We obviously had hoped to get a result here in Gladbach, but our performance wasn’t good enough. We weren’t as strong as we normally are in a number of areas, particularly set pieces. They were our downfall today. We had chances to equalise through Jovic and Ilsanker, but we didn’t get the goal. We took some risks towards the end, but it ultimately backfired. I don’t buy that this result has anything to do with me joining Borussia next season. We need to move on from this game and dust ourselves down because we have another important match on Tuesday.
