Sippel: "We paid the price"

After a bitter 3-2 defeat away to TSG Hoffenheim, Borussia goalkeeper Tobias Sippel spoke with the press to discuss the reasons for the defeat and the run-in at the end of the season.

Tobias Sippel on...

…the match: We really didn’t have a good game, not even in the first half. Sure, we took a 2-0 lead during the first 45 but nobody really knew how. We talked at the break and stated clearly that under no circumstances could we continue playing like that. But that is exactly what happened. We didn’t win any duels and lost lots of balls. We paid the price and we had to watch three goals hit the back of the net in just quarter of an hour. We let it happen – at this level and at this stage of the season, we can’t allow that. We had to be more intelligent. We’re at the business end of the season and every team is fighting for the remaining points. We didn’t have the right attitude for that in Sinsheim.

…defeat after previously going for games unbeaten: We obviously expected more from ourselves in the game against Hoffenheim. We would all have loved to win there. Every team is fighting for every single point at this late stage in the season. We don’t want to lose touch with the teams above us in the table but this game in Sinsheim really didn’t help us in that regard.

…the chances of securing a Europa League spot: It’s hard to say how our chances look right now. The bottom line is that we have to focus on ourselves and not look at others. We still have four games ahead of us in the Bundesliga and we have to keep paddling until the end. If we play like we did in Sinsheim in our final four matches then it won’t matter who is above us because we will be out of the fight.

Tobias Sippel had to endure conceding three times in a little over 15 minutes.
