Borussia to open DFB-Pokal campaign on Monday night

The German Football Association (DFB) announced the dates and timings for the first round of the DFB-Pokal on Monday afternoon (12/7). Borussia will open their campaign on Monday, 9th August (20:45 CEST) away at 1. FC Kaiserslautern.

Last weekend, former Borussia player Thomas Broich conducted the draw for the first round of the DFB-Pokal. Today, the DFB have announced the dates and kick-off times for the opening round of fixtures. Borussia will face 1. FC Kaiserslautern away on Monday, 9th August (20:45 CEST).

The first round will be played between 6th and 9th August, with the second round scheduled to take place from 26th-27th October. The round of 16 games will be played on 18th-19th January 2022, followed by the quarterfinals on 1st-2nd March. The semis will then take place on 19th-20th April, with the final at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on 21st May 2022.

Last meeting in February 2012

For the first time since 18th February 2012, the Foals will be returning to the Betzenberg. Back then, Borussia won 2-1 thanks to goals from Patrick Herrmann and Juan Arango. Kaiserslautern were then relegated to the 2. Bundesliga at the end of that season. In 2018, the club suffered another relegation to the third division.

This will be the fifth time the two sides are meeting in the DFB-Pokal. The first of these came in 1972/73, with Borussia winning 2-1 at home in the quarterfinals before a 3-1 triumph in the return leg. In the quarterfinals in 1980/81, it was FCK who would advance on the backs of a 3-1 win. In 1993/94, it was the Foals who would be knocked out in the round of 16 following a 3-2 defeat at home. The 1994/95 season witnessed a legendary meeting between the sides, as Borussia won 1-0 (a.e.t.) in the semi-finals. Most recently, the two clubs met in the second round in 2000/01, with the Foals easily advancing with a 5-1 win.
