Stindl: “We didn’t manage to go to our limit”

After the 4-0 defeat to Leverkusen, Lars Stindl spoke to the media. Below are the most important quotes. Borussia’s captain on…

… the team’s performance: We started the game really badly and were 2-0 down after ten minutes. After that, we got into it a bit better and had a spell where we had two good chances to get a goal back. But Jonas Hofmann hit the post, and I had my penalty saved. On a day like that, you simply have to take those chances to get back into the game. If we had done so, the game would have gone differently.

… the reasons behind the heavy defeat: We definitely didn’t underestimate our opposition, because Bayer Leverkusen are a definite top side. They showed that in impressive fashion. We didn’t manage to go to our limit, not only in a footballing sense, but also in our whole approach. We allowed them to outplay us too easily in a lot of situations, and that’s how we ended up on the end of a 4-0 defeat.

… his missed penalty: The penalty just sums up our bad day. I should have hit it better. I’d scored against Lukas Hradecky from the penalty spot a few months ago. That’s what I wanted to do again, but I didn’t manage it. But these things happen. Aside from the penalty, I’m disappointed with our performance on the whole.

… lessons from the game: Maybe after our good performance against Bayern, we assumed our quality would be enough against Leverkusen. We have this quality in our squad, which you have seen time and again, but quality alone is not enough. More needs to come of it – in the sense of our engagement and our approach. It’s about bringing the consistency that we showed against Bayern onto the pitch week in, week out. If we don’t do that, we don’t have a chance against teams like that.

Lars Stindl's disappointment was evident at full time.
