Gladbach triumph 1-0 against Dortmund

The Foals have recorded back-to-back home wins, beating Borussia Dortmund 1-0 on Saturday night. Denis Zakaria netted the match-winner in the 35th minute.

A sold-out crowd of 25,000 fans witnessed an evenly-matched first half between the sides. There were few chances on goal at either end, with both teams fighting hard in midfield. In the 37th minute, Denis Zakaria was able to bury the Foals’ first real chance on goal to take the lead. BVB struggled to find their way into the final third, with the best chance coming from Mats Hummels, as he headed home in the 8th minute. The goal was then disallowed due to offside. Mo Dahoud was then shown a second yellow and sent off in the 40th minute after a foul on Joe Scally.

After the change of ends, the Foals were firmly in control. Hofmann (54’), Netz (55’) and Embolo (75’) all could have added to the scoreline, but failed to make the most of their chances. Dortmund recorded few chances, as the Foals made the most of their man advantage. Thorgan Hazard came close with a header in the 90th minute, but missed the target. Gladbach were able to see the game through and take all three points.

TEAM NEWS

Head coach Adi Hütter made four changes to the line-up following last weekend’s defeat at FC Augsburg. Tony Jantschke and Breel Embolo replaced Jordan Beyer and Alassane Plea, with Jonah Hofmann returning from injury in place of Patrick Herrmann. Manu Koné made his Borussia debut, coming into the side in place of Florian Neuhaus. Hütter went with a back three of Jantschke, Matthias Ginter and Nico Elvedi, with Yann Sommer in goal. Joe Scally and Luca Netz lined up on the wings, with Denia Zakaria and Koné in central midfield. Hofmann, Lars Stindl and Breel Embolo all lined up in attack.

Borussia were without the injured Marcus Thuram (MCL tear), Stefan Lainer (broken ankle), Mamadou Doucouré (rehab following his Achilles tear) and Ramy Bensebaini (groin problem). Hofmann returned to the starting XI after muscle issues had sidelined him for the last home game against Bielefeld. Koné was then taken off with a slight knock in the second half.

FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS

8’: Hummels gets on the end of a free-kick from outside the box and heads it past Sommer, but the goal is disallowed as the defender was offside.

11’: Hofmann steps up to take a free-kick just outside the box, but fires his shot into the wall.

19’: Elvedi gets on the end of another Hofmann free kick and redirects it to Ginter, who is unable to beat Kobel.

37’: Zakaria opens the scoring! After a quick one-two with Ginter, Zakaria ends up with the ball at his feet and leaves Kobel with no chance.

39’: Stindl gets on the end of a long ball, but Netz is unable to control his cross to get off a shot.

40’: Dortmund’s Mo Dahoud is shown a second yellow after a foul on Scally and is sent off. Borussia will finish the match with a man advantage!

SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS

46’: BVB come out the break with plenty of momentum, but are unable to make the most of it, as Malen heads wide following a cross from Meunier.

55’: Hofmann beats his man down the right wing and has a go from the touch line, but Kobel is on hand to make the save.

56’: Zakaria’s cross finds Netz, but his shot is blocked by Meunier.

74’: Zakaria wins the ball and drives into the final third. Hummels gets in the way of his attempt, as Embolo heads the rebound wide.

79’: Hofmann carries the ball to the touch line and attempts to cut it back, but his pass fails to find a teammate.

88’: BVB are awarded a free-kick just outside the box, but Hazard’s shot hits the wall. Sommer is able to easily pick off the resulting cross.

90’: Sommer parries a cross from Schulz, but redirects it onto the head of Hazard. Fortunately, the Belgian heads over the bar.
