“A frustrating result” - #BMGVfB match reaction

We heard from the players and coaches after Borussia’s 1-1 draw with VfB Stuttgart on Saturday night.

Lars Stindl: The draw is a frustrating result for us. We put in a really good performance, particularly in the first half. We started the game well, but a wonder goal from Mavropanos had us 1-0 down. We didn’t let it faze us though and carried on playing our game. We had a lot of numbers in their box, won a lot of second balls and created a lot of chances. Eventually, that led to the equaliser. Unfortunately, we failed to take full advantage of our dominance in that period. We weren’t able to keep it up as much towards the end of the game as we started to run out of steam a little. I think we were on top for most of the game, so it’s a shame that we weren’t able to reward a mature performance with three points.

Yann Sommer: I thought it was a hard-fought game. We had a good start and were very aggressive without the ball. Their goal came out of nowhere, but we managed to get back level thanks to a great goal from Jonas Hofmann. We had them feeling the pressure in and around their box, but sometimes the final ball or just that little bit of luck was missing in order to get the three points. I didn’t really have to deal with many shots, which is always a good sign. Nevertheless, today was another example of how close the Bundesliga is. Stuttgart were very tricky opponents; they always put us under pressure with our build-up play and made the spaces very tight.

Nico Elvedi: There was more than a point in it for us today. I think if you look at the game over the whole 90 minutes, we were the better side. We didn’t allow them many opportunities and Stuttgart scored with their first shot of the game. They only really had one more decent chance after that, otherwise we defended well. We had our opportunities at the other end, so I think the only thing you can criticise is perhaps that we weren’t incisive enough. I still think it was a good performance from us overall. We can take a lot of confidence into the next game and want to pick up all three points.

Adi Hütter: When you look at the statistics, it’s very frustrating not to be coming away with the three points. We played very well, particularly in the first half, and brought a lot of power out onto the pitch. It’s always tricky chasing the game when you’re behind, but the team gave their absolute all to equalise before the break. We didn’t quite have the same control in the second half. There was a phase where our final ball kept going astray, which wasn’t great. All in all, we’re left with a bitter taste having only picked up a point.

VfB Stuttgart head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo: I’m happy with the performance and with the point, which I think is fair enough. Gladbach obviously had more of the game and a lot more shots, but there are a lot of long-range efforts and set pieces within that. We kept on battling and always managed to get something in the way. It’s not like we didn’t carry a threat ourselves either; if our final ball had been a little better, we could have had one or two chances more. I think it’s a credit to the team that we were even able to be competitive after what’s been a turbulent ten days.

Yann Sommer: "That little bit of luck was missing"
