Match facts ahead of #BMGFCB in the DFB-Pokal

Everything you need to know as the Foals host FC Bayern in the second round of the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday evening (20:45 CEST).

Attendance

  • Current coronavirus measures allow 48,500 spectators to attend the home game at BORUSSIA-PARK. All available tickets have been sold, ensuring a sell-out crowd.
  • Fans attending the stadium must be able to provide proof of vaccination, recovery or a negative test result in order to enter BORUSSIA-PARK.

Head-to-head record

  • The two sides are facing off for the eighth time in the history of the DFB-Pokal. Five of the previous seven ties went into extra time, with two of those being decided via a penalty shoot out: the first ever meeting in the final in 1984 (1-1, 7-6 on pens to Bayern) and the most recent in the 2011/12 semi-final (0-0, 4-2 on pens to Bayern).
  • In the semi-final of the 1984/85 Pokal, Bayern came out on top 1-0 in extra time. The sides met again in the second round in 1987/88. The first game ended in a 2-2 draw after extra time, before Bayern won the reverse fixture 3-2 after extra time at the Olympiastadion in Munich. Bayern won on two other occasions in the second round: a 2-1 win in Gladbach in the 1996/97 season and a 3-1 home victory in the 2007/08 season.
  • Bayern have of their last five competitive games at BORUSSIA-PARK, a 5-1 win in March 2019. The most recent meeting was a 1-1 draw in August, with the Foals winning the other three meetings.

Statistics

  • Borussia have lifted the DFB-Pokal on three occasions, most recently in 1995. The Foals have also reached the final two other times. Bayern are the record champions, having lifted the trophy 20 times. Their last success came in 2020.
  • Last season saw the Foals knocked out in the quarter finals after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund. Bayern’s campaign ended in the second round after a 2-2 (6-5 on pens) defeat to Holstein Kiel.
  • Borussia beat Kaiserslautern 1-0 in the first round, while Bayern won 12-0 against Bremer SV – the second highest cup win in the club’s history.
  • Attacker Robert Lewandowski could make his 50th DFB-Pokal appearance on Wednesday. Finding the back of the net against Borussia would see him become only the fifth player to reach the 40 goal mark in the competition – after Manfred Burgsmüller (40), Klaus Fischer (46), Dieter Müller (48) and Gerd Müller (78).
  • The Foals’ record scorer in the competition is Hans-Jörg Criens (18 goals in 26 games). From the current squad, Lars Stindl is the holder with 11 goals in 28 games – three of those coming for Hannover 96 and eight for Borussia.
