“We didn’t settle down after equalising” – reaction to the game

All the reaction from goalkeeper Yann Sommer, as well as head coaches Adi Hütter and Steffen Baumgart following the 4-1 defeat to 1. FC Koln.

Yann Sommer: It’s so disappointing to lose 4-1 in the derby. I thought it was a pretty even game for large portions. The equaliser brought us back into the game – I had the feeling that we were really in the swing of things and could get another, but then we made a mistake which led to us conceding the second goal. Mistakes like these happen so easily; they are a part of the sport. The thing is, it knocked us out of our rhythm. We need to be harsh on ourselves for not being more consistent after equalising, and that we didn’t settle down. Emotions always run high in derbies, and a loss in these games is always painful.

Head coach Adi Hütter: This loss is very disappointing for all involved; the club, the fans, and the team. We’ll all feel it over the next few dars. I can’t stand here and apologise for our performance, but I can apologise for the result and the fact we didn’t do well enough after our equaliser. It’s unbelievably annoying and we need to remember that feeling from today and beyond.

1. FC Köln head coach Steffen Baumgart: We’re very happy with the result. I think the win was well-earned looking at the course of the entire game. We did have one or two chances in the first half, but it was a pretty even game all things considered. I thought the game would turn on its head after their equaliser, but they made a mistake – or perhaps we forced them into one! The biggest thing is that it’s a massive joy for the lads who scored and worked so hard for so long, and I’m delighted that everything went our way. We’ve just played one of the best teams in Germany – you need to wear them down and sometimes even fight to bring them down. The lads did that well. We also played some great football now and again.
