Sommer: “Making it too easy for the opposition”

Yann Sommer, Joe Scally and the two head coaches gave their thoughts after Borussia were defeated 4-1 in Leipzig.

Yann Sommer: It’s hard to win a game when you allow the opposition to have so many chances. On top of that we aren’t posing a threat often enough when we do have possession right now. We’ve conceded 14 goals in our last three matches. Among those there have been lots of set-pieces and that just can’t happen. We aren’t getting tight enough to opposition players, we aren't aggressive enough in the challenges. and so we’re making it too easy for our opponents. I’m not saying that we aren’t a team, because we definitely are. But we have to get back to playing games with confidence and trust, and to having a better balance between attack and defence. Otherwise it is going to be a difficult season.

Joe Scally: Obviously the whole team is really disappointed because we expected a lot more from the game. Leipzig made a lot of headway down our right side in the first half, they were constantly on the move. There was also a period from the 70th minute onward where we played well. We fought hard, pushed ourselves and created some chances. Now we have to stand together to prepare for next week and to win against Frankfurt.

Head coach Adi Hütter: Obviously we will have to accept the criticism after this loss, but there’s a few things that we should take heart from as well. We had some good moments in that spell when we took hold of the game and got stuck into the tackles. From the outside maybe you get the impression that this isn’t a team right now, but it is. They are just in a rough patch right now. Everyone has to try and stay positive to come out of this together. I’m not going to go mouthing off in public, but there are a few things that we will address internally, of course - just as we have always done. It’s not a nice situation to be in. We know that, but we have to try and keep cool heads.

Trainer Domenico Tedesco (RB Leipzig head coach): We played a good match. We had a few opportunities to score the third goal and we let a lot come and go. That was probably still going through the heads of one or two players, but you have to shake it off quickly. In the end it all came together and the chances weren’t decisive. Every match in the Bundesliga is difficult and really tight. Gladbach were decent, though, and had some good players out on the pitch.
