Friedrich: "I want to get Borussia back to where they belong"

Borussia announced the signing of Marvin Friedrich on Tuesday. In an interview, the 26-year-old defender discussed his first impressions of the club, his goals and an early encounter with Bayer Leverkusen.

Marvin, welcome to Borussia. What are your first impressions of the club?

Marvin Friedrich: First of all, I’m pleased that the transfer went through. I’ve played here several times and can’t wait to run out at BORUSSIA-PARK. I hope that the fans will be back in the stadiums soon. Whenever I’ve played here, the atmosphere has always been great, and it’s been a lot of fun, so it’s such an amazing feeling knowing that I will get to do it as a Borussia player now.

Do you still remember your first-ever Bundesliga game?

Friedrich: Of course. I was able to make my debut here in Mönchengladbach, back when I was playing for Schalke 04. The result from our perspective wasn’t a great one (ed. note: Borussia won 4-1), but the day absolutely still stays in my memory.

Why did you decide to move to Borussia?

Friedrich: I wanted to take the next step in my career, and I think Gladbach is the perfect place to do that. I see a lot of potential here. It’s a huge, traditional club where a lot is possible. That’s why I wanted to join Borussia and I’m pleased to be here.

Have you had the chance to get to know the coach Adi Hütter and the rest the squad yet?

Friedrich: I’ve been able to speak to the coach. He’s a great and very honest person. I haven’t met the team yet, that will happen on Wednesday. I’m looking forward to everything getting going out on the pitch.

What are your goals at Borussia?

Friedrich: I’m just looking forward to getting stuck in to help the club get back to where it belongs. On a personal level, I want to develop further while helping the club achieve its goals – that includes this season.

Your last game for Union Berlin was on Saturday against Bayer Leverkusen, who visit BORUSSIA-PARK this weekend. What is your impression of them?

Friedrich: I don’t mind the fact that I’m playing Leverkusen against straight away. They’re a good side and it will be a hard task for us. I’m sure that the coach will have us well prepared, and we’ll be ready on Sunday.
