“A weight off our shoulders” – #BMGFCA reaction

We heard from the players and the coaches after Borussia’s 3-2 win over FC Augsburg on Saturday afternoon.

Jonas Hofmann: It’s an incredibly important win. We’re delighted to have kept the three points here. It’s a weight off our shoulders, not just for us and the team, but even for the fans. We played really well in the first half. We were aggressive, put them under pressure and regularly won the ball back high up the pitch – that was the kind of football we want to be playing. It wasn’t as solid in the second half. It was a close call at the end and we had to squeeze the win over the line. Nevertheless, we can go home happy. It’s certainly another step forward, but we know that we won’t be handed anything and that we have to keep working hard.

Patrick Herrmann: The fans singing happy birthday was really nice. I’m not really fussed about my birthday – it was more important that we won the game. We took a step in the right direction in Bielefeld last week and we’ve taken another today. We’re on the right path. We put in a good performance; we were alert from the off and created a lot of chances. We absolutely deserved the win in the end. If we had played like that more often this season, we’d no doubt have a lot more points on the board.

Yann Sommer: The win will do us good. The way we played was just as important though. We had good tempo on the ball, were brave and created some great chances, particularly in the first half. We had a phase after the break where we were a little sloppy and passive, and that played into Augsburg’s hands. The late goal made it a little nervy, but I wasn’t too worried. It’s important in our situation that we never stop fighting and keep on defending our goal with everything we’ve got right until the end. Lasso played brilliantly today, not just on the ball but off it as well.

Adi Hütter: I think we saw an exciting Bundesliga match with lots of highlights and five goals. Augsburg caused us some problems at the start and could have taken the lead. I think over the whole 90 minutes though, we deserved to win the game. We had chances to get a fourth when we were 3-1 up, but Augsburg never gave up and were tricky opponents today. We had a little bit of luck in our side at the end. A weight has very much been lifted given our situation. We’re on a good path. Bielefeld was a small step and today was a bigger one.

FC Augsburg head coach Markus Weinzierl: I feel like there was more in it for us today. We could have gone ahead in the first half, but we were a little careless and conceded the opener. We had our game plan for the second half, but we slept through the first minute. I’m disappointed to be going home empty-handed.

Patrick Herrmann was delighted to be serenaded by the fans on his birthday
