Borussia receive total donations of €132,000 from charity friendly

A total of €132,000 was received during the Foals’ charity friendly game against the Ukraine national team on Wednesday evening for the benefit of those affected in Ukraine.

Borussia Mönchengladbach not only sent a clear signal of peace and solidarity towards the people of Ukraine during their friendly against the Ukraine national team, but also helped to raise a total donation of €132,000. The donations will go towards helping those affected by the war in Ukraine.

Additionally, ProSieben, who broadcasted the game live in Germany, promoted the German aid  charity “Aktion Deutschland Hilft” during the match, which led to a total of €642,745 in donations on the evening.

“A peaceful football festival”

20,223 tickets were issued for the game, with more of half of those going to Ukrainian nationals who had been invited by the club. “We’re especially pleased that so many Ukrainian people were there,” said Borussia CEO Stephan Schippers. “It was a peaceful football festival and an evening on which our guests could hopefully have a few hours of enjoyment during what are incredibly difficult times.” Sporting director Roland Virkus added, “It’s a great honour for us not only to help the Ukraine national team with their preparations for the World Cup qualifying play-offs, but also, and more importantly, show a sign of humanity and solidarity.”

A while ago, Borussia had already reached almost €180,000 of donations as part of the club’s “Borussia hilft” action, raising money to aid people both in and out of Ukraine. Donations for the victims of war in Ukraine can be made directly to the Borussia Foundation’s bank account: IBAN DE11 4401 0046 0190 0134 68, using reference “borussiahilft Ukraine”.

Match-worn shirts from the game, which exclusively feature the chest printing “Borussia – Ukraine”, will be auctioned on the auktion.borussia.de site until Sunday evening (15th May, 20:00 CEST). Additionally, five shirts from the Ukraine national team will also be auctioned. All of the proceeds will be donated. “To be able to hold the fixture was a great honour for us,” said Schippers. “To be able to turn around the whole thing within nine days was also a great accomplishment from our staff and also our partners, who offered their products or services either for free or at a reduced cost, as well as our external partners. For this we would like to express our sincere thanks.”

Letter of thanks from Ukrainian football association

The club also received a thank you in the form of a written letter from the Ukrainian football association. “Every day, we feel the solidarity and support from the footballing community across the whole world,” wrote general secretary Yuriy Zapisotskiy. “We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to Borussia for making it possible to carry out this friendly despite their tight schedule towards the end of their season. It was important on one hand to help the Ukraine national team with their preparations for the World Cup play-offs, and on the other hand when considering the fundraising for charitable purposes. We wholly believe that Ukraine will win this battle and soon will be able to welcome the international football family to our beautiful country again.”
