Borussia loanees: Season in review

Five players left the club on loan last season. We take a look back at how Hannes Wolf, Rocco Reitz, Moritz Nicolas, Torben Müsel and Andreas Poulsen got on.

Hannes Wolf: The Austrian joined Championship side Swansea City on loan at the end of January. In 19 appearances, Wolf started 18 matches with one further appearance as a second-half substitute. The attacker usually played the full 90 minutes and was used predominantly on the left flank. After a bit of a slow start, with no goal involvements in his first eight games, Wolf missed a further four games through injury. In mid-March he registered his first assist for the club and two more soon followed, as well as two goals of his own for Swansea. Looking back, Wolf is pleased with his time in South Wales: “Obviously It's a lot of fun to play and feel wanted. That's how it's been in the last five months. On top of that there is the fact that I have almost always played the full game, which has done my self-confidence and fitness a lot of good.”

Rocco Reitz: The 19-year-old spent last season on loan in the Belgian top-flight with VV St. Truiden. In 34 games, Reitz made five starts and appeared 18 times as a substitute. The Borussia youngster missed two games due to suspension following a red card, and he was left out of the matchday squad on three further occasions. Overall, Reitz contributed three goals and one assist. He also played an hour in the Belgian cup last October as Truiden were knocked out after extra time, losing 3-2. “I've looked at this year as a learning opportunity. To be able to play in the Belgian top-flight at such a young age has been a valuable experience. With the appearances in the starting eleven I have been rewarded for my strong performances in training. But the games where I've come off the bench and been able to bring new energy to the team have been really educational as well,” said Reitz of his time in Belgium.

Moritz Nicolas: Borussia’s young goalie spent 2021/22 in the cathedral city of Cologne. The 24-year-old was first choice between the sticks for third-division Viktoria Köln, guarding the net in 31 of the club’s 38 matches. Nicolas missed four games with a muscle injury. The young Foal was also in net for games in the DFB-Pokal (a 3-2 defeat to TSG Hoffenheim) and the Middle Rhine Cup (an 8-0 victory over 1. FC Spich). Nicolas conceded a total of 50 goals across all 33 matches, with ten clean sheets. The most recent clean sheet came against 1. FC Kaiserslautern as Viktoria were able to secure their place in the 3. Liga for another year.

Torben Müsel: The attacking midfielder was also on loan in Belgium, spending the second half of the season at top-tier side KAS Eupen. Mostly used as a false nine or a traditional centre forward, Müsel played ten games - nine in the league and one in the cup. It was mostly short appearances for the 22-year-old, however, as he didn't play the full 90 minutes even once for Eupen. Despite being unable to contribute to a goal during his time in Belgium, the youngster is positive in his assessment of the loan spell: “The Belgian league is a bit more robust in comparison with the Bundesliga, I would say. The challenges are harder, but that's done me the world of good because I've been able to learn a thing or two from that. On the whole, it's been a massive learning experience for me.”

Andreas Poulsen: The Dane spent the entirety of last season on loan at 1. FC Ingolstadt in the second tier of German football. It was tough for Poulsen to get the desired gametime as in 35 competitive matches (Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal) our left-back featured just six times. In the remainder of games he was either an unused substitute or left out of the squad entirely. He did, however, set up a goal in the 3-2 win over Erzgebirge Aue. It wasn't a successful season for Ingolstadt as they became the first club to be relegated at the end of April.

Torben Müsel has been back training with Borussia since the conclusion of the Belgian season.
