Borges Sanches: "I had to ask again if it was really me!"

In an interview, Yvandro Borges Sanches discusses his time on international duty with Luxembourg, his relationship with head coach Daniel Farke and his teammates, and his future goals with Gladbach.

Yvandro, today was your first time back training at the BORUSSIA-PARK after your international duty with Luxembourg. Are you happy to be back?

Borges Sanches: I’m feeling good and I’m happy that I’m back. It was nice to be with the national team again during the break – we had a good week with Luxembourg. Now I’m pleased to be back at Borussia and look forward to preparing for our game in Bremen.

You and Luxembourg finished your Nations League group in second behind Turkey, taking a total of 11 points (with three wins, two draws and a loss). How do you assess your performance in this tournament?

Borges Sanches: We can definitely be satisified with our performance. 11 points is a good total. Nevertheless, we are still annoyed about the defeat at home to Turkey (2-0). Had we taken points there, we would have topped the group. But what’s done is done, and we can’t do anything about it now.

You played 90 minutes in the 3-3 draw in Turkey and the 1-0 win against Lithuania, and you even got an assist in the former. How did you feel about those games?

Borges Sanches: We had done a lot of work before the games, because we know we have a good team. Against Turkey it was a rollercoaster of emotions, but a good game from us overall. The win against Lithuania was definitely hard work. We can be satisfied with our performances.

Let's talk about your Bundesliga debut: You were able to collect your first top flight minutes when Gladbach played away at Freiburg. How happy were you about that?

Borges Sanches: I didn't expect to be substituted in during the game. When I heard my name called, I had to ask again if it was really me (laughs). Afterwards I was simply overjoyed, it only really sunk in afterwards.

After the game, you thanked coach Daniel Farke for his trust in you. How is your relationship with him?

Borges Sanches: Very good. We communicate a lot, he is a really good coach and has brought a lot of new impetus into the team. You can really see that now as everyone is coming together.

Marvin Friedrich praised you after your performance in Freiburg, but he also stressed that you have to push harder and be ready for your next opportunity. How much do your experienced teammates help you in your development?

Borges Sanches: I am very happy to receive all the tips and advice I get, as well as criticism. Their experience helps me enormously. I'm the youngest in the team and so there are simply a lot of things I don’t know yet. So for me, it’s very important to be always listening when they tell me something.

On Saturday evening (18:30 CEST) you face SV Werder Bremen. How much are you anticipating the game, and possibly even your second Bundesliga appearance.

Borges Sanches: Very much. Of course I would be very happy if I get to play again. We'll see if that happens (laughs).

What are your next goals at Borussia?

Borges Sanches: I want to work hard in training and will continue to do so, to further my personal development and then get some more match minutes.
