Borussia celebrate first away win of the season

Borussia opened the second half of the season with a 4-1 win at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, their first victory on the road in 2022/23.

The Foals struck first at the PreZero Arena in Sinsheim, as Lars Stindl teed up Jonas Hofmann for the opening goal (12’). The duo would team up again for Borussia’s second of the night, as Hofmann placed another shot past Oliver Baumann at the near post (37’).

After the break, the game was defined by several fouls and breaks in play. Hoffenheim were able to create a few chances for themselves and got a goal back late on through Ihlas Bebou (80’). The Foals responded immediately, with Stindl finishing off a pass from Hofmann to make it 3-1 (83’). Hannes Wolf netted Borussia’s fourth goal of the afternoon in injury time to wrap up the win (90’+1).

TEAM NEWS

Head coach Daniel Farke made three changes to the starting line-up following the 1-0 defeat to Augsburg in midweek. Joe Scally, Jonas Hofmann and Lars Stindl started in place of Stefan Lainer, Nathan Ngoumou and Alassane Plea. Jonas Omlin started in goal, behind a back-four of Scally, Ko Itakura, Nico Elvedi and Ramy Bensebaini. Julian Weigl and Manu Koné began in defensive midfield, with Jonas Hofmann, Christoph Kramer and Lars Stindl in attack. Marcus Thuram was the lone striker up top.

Farke had a full squad to choose from, with Kramer and Hofmann returning to full fitness in time for today’s game. Yvandro Borges Sanches, who was sidelined recently due to a tendon irritation in his hip flexor, featured for the U23s in a friendly against RW Oberhausen.

FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

8’: The first shot of the game came from the hosts, as Christoph Baumgartner sent an effort wide of the goal from 20 metres out.

12’: Hofmann opens the scoring! The 30-year-old gets on the end of a long ball from Stindl and controls it with his head, before finishing in the bottom corner with his second touch.

13’: Baumgartner rounds Omlin and looks set to equalise, but Itakura is able to get back and clear it on the line.

28’: Rudy has a go from range, but Omlin is able to scoop up his shot.

37’: Once again, Stindl finds Hofmann with a long pass up field. Hoffi tries to cut it past the defenders, and is fortunate to have the ball knocked back in his path before he buries it in the bottom right corner again. The linesman’s flag is up, but after a short VAR check the goal is given!

44’: Kaderabek’s shot from outside the box sails over the crossbar.

SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

63’: The first chance after the break falls to the hosts, as Bebou lays the ball off to the far post, where Dabbur lies in wait. Itakura is alert, however, and is able to block his shot.

66’: Thuram’s cross just missed Hofmann at the near post, as the ball falls in Stindl’s path. Baumann is able to get a foot to his shot and keep it out.

69’: Bischof has a shot, but it sails just wide of the post.

77’: The ball falls to Kramaric inside the box, as he places it just past the post.

78’: Back-to-back chances for the hosts, as Baumgartner hits the post. Omlin is forced to get back on his feet quickly to save Kramaric’s header from close range.

80’: Hoffenheim get one back through Bebou.

84’: Borussia net their third goal of the night! Stindl is played through by Hofmann and does well to place the ball in the back of the net from close range.

90’+1: Hannes Wolf has an immediate impact off the bench! Fellow substitute Luca Netz cuts it back in his path, as Wolf taps in to make it 4-1.
