“We made too many mistakes” - #M05BMG reaction

We gathered the thoughts of the players and coaches after Borussia's 4-0 loss to Mainz 05 on Friday night.

Christoph Kramer: There aren’t many positives we can take from the game. I actually felt like it was going well at the start. We had a decent first half against a very in-form side. We needed to react better to their opening goal though and come out stronger in the second half. We had chances to get back into it after their second goal too. The third killed it though and we were just chasing the ball then.

Stefan Lainer: I think it was a good away performance in the first half against a good Mainz side, who are full of confidence. However, we missed the chance to go ahead and we ended up going in behind instead. At half time, we felt like we would be able to turn it around, but then came blow after blow and Mainz were clinical. All of a sudden, it was 3-0. We cannot allow that to happen and I’m incredible sorry to the fans, who gave us brilliant support. We were on a level playing field, but ultimately, we made it too easy for them to score their goals.

Daniel Farke: We have to be critical of ourselves after a 4-0 defeat. We made too many mistakes today. We dominated the game early on, had a lot of possession and two big chances. Mainz, on the other hand, scored out of nothing. We went into second half with high ambitions, but we gave the ball away under no pressure and then Mainz can play one ball in behind and shoot. We didn’t deal with it straight away and so they were able to score from the rebound. It becomes very tough from there, and that’s what it was. Football is a game of errors, and we made too many of them today. We also lacked the desire to press immediately after losing the ball and set the tone with the right body language. Those are the things than can swing a tight game your way. We didn’t show that for much of today’s game.

Mainz 05 head coach Bo Svensson: It was a difficult game for us in the first half. Still, we managed to get the goal with more or less our only chance. It wasn’t that Gladbach had lots of opportunities, but they had a lot of the ball. We didn’t have enough intensity in our play or in our press, and Gladbach have real quality. We improved a lot after the break. We didn’t do as much running as in the first half, but our intensity was better and so we were quicker. That allowed us to play our game.
