“Deserved win for Union” - #BMGFCU reaction

We gathered the thoughts from the players and coaches after Borussia’s 1-0 defeat to Union Berlin on Sunday evening.

Jonas Omlin: You could see why Union Berlin are towards the top of the table. They make the most out of very little. They didn’t have the best chances, but they took one of them clinically when we went to sleep a little. We had a lot of the ball, but we struggled to create much from it. Ultimately, it was a typical Union Berlin game. Perhaps we should have tried out some other things during the game, perhaps looked to get deep more, although that’s very difficult against them.

Jonas Hofmann: I think the defeat was avoidable. We had a good first half and were in control, even though we were missing some penetration in the final third. We worked the ball well at times, but you have to give credit to Union for how effective their defence is. We weren’t in the game for a period in the second half. We had a few good moments at the end again, but we didn’t have follow up well enough to have options to pass to.

Julian Weigl: It was a deserved win for Union Berlin in the end because they had the more dangerous moments in the game. If you look at the possession stats, it shows that it was by no means a bad performance from us. We were dominant and moved the ball around well. However, we didn’t create a clear-cut chance in the whole match. I think we were too slow at times and needed to switch play quicker. Union defended well as always, shifted across quickly and kept things tight, which made it hard for us to get into dangerous areas. Union also probed in attack and they’re incredibly dangerous from crosses. We dealt with most of them well, but on one occasion, we didn’t pay enough attention, and they scored. Our reaction to the goal was good; we picked ourselves up and worked hard.

Daniel Farke: Union Berlin are incredibly compact and it’s very hard to create chances against them. It took us a bit of time until we were able to turn our possession into goalscoring opportunities, yet we still missed that final pass too often. Union barely made a mistake at the back and were clinical in attack. We made one mistake too many and didn’t apply enough pressure to stop the ball over the ball, and then we didn’t defend it quickly enough. We’re obviously disappointed with the result.

Union Berlin head coach Urs Fischer: The team were very compact and were well organised. We managed to stop Gladbach from playing the football that makes them dangerous. We worked the ball around really nicely at times and fortunately we were able to take one of our chances. All in all, I think it’s a deserved win. I liked how disciplined we worked and how we frustrated our opponents. That’s what I want to see from us every matchday.
