“We’ll have to live with the draw” - Augsburg match reaction

We gathered the thoughts from the players and coaches following Borussia’s 1-1 draw with FC Augsburg on Saturday.

Yann Sommer: We had enough chances to score a second goal, so we could have wrapped up the result, but we also ought to have been more composed at the end to see out the win. We had a man advantage and there was lots of space. We shouldn’t be conceding a goal in that position – it’s very frustrating. We need to do something about these late goals too. When it keeps on happening, it can’t be a coincidence. We need to be more focused in the closing stages.

Hannes Wolf: I think we had some good phases where we held onto the ball well and played forward at the right times. There were others that were very chaotic though. Despite being ahead and having a man extra, we still ended up in being caught on the counter a couple of times, which shouldn’t be happening. We could have won the game four or five-nil; we had some big chances that we have to be taking. If you don’t, you end up with a result like this.

Christoph Kramer: We had enough chances and should have wrapped the game up earlier. When we were playing against ten men, I was frustrated by us being scared to hold on to the ball a little longer. We were too sloppy in possession and that gave Augsburg belief. You can always concede from a deflected shot, but there were already two or three moments before that where we gave them a sniff of an equaliser. If we had made it 2-0, then it would have been game over. Today’s game could probably play out 100 times and you’d only end up with a draw like today once.

Marco Rose: The boys went about the task in the right way. After Augsburg’s first chance, we took command and quickly went ahead. Unfortunately, we missed the chance to go 2-0 up. Bar the odd exception, we didn’t give much away defensively, yet we’ve ended up dropping two points late on, and it’s not an issue we can dance around. It’s a painful learning process because we’ve already dropped so many points like that this season. We’ll have to live with the draw and work on the things that aren’t working as we would like.

Augsburg head coach Heiko Herrlich: We’re delighted to have got the equaliser late on. The lads were a man down but showed real determination and character. We started the game very well and could have gone in front with Finnbogason’s chance. We gave them a good game and saw a decent amount of the ball. We could have defended better for their goal. We certainly rode our luck with a few chances that Gladbach created. I said to the boys at half time that they should carry on believing in themselves despite being a man down.
