Oscar Wendt leaves Borussia after ten years

After ten years with the club, left-back Oscar Wendt will be leaving us this summer and returning to his home country, Sweden, where he will play for IFK Göteborg as of next season.

"Oscar Wendt has had a fantastic journey here in the last decade, which can be seen among other things by the six seasons competing in Europe. He also has more Bundesliga appearances for Borussia than any other foreign player in the club’s history. That shows just how important he has been to us," said sporting director Max Eberl: "Oscar will now try with the rest of the team to win as many games as possible in the remainder of the season. After that, we will wish him all the best for what lies ahead."

"I am extremely grateful for the fantastic time I’ve had here at Borussia. I am 100 percent a Foal and obviously I’m sad to be leaving the club this summer. For me and my family, however, the time has come for us to go back home to Sweden," said Oscar Wendt, whose contract runs out at the end of the season. "Above all, I will miss all the people that I’ve worked with, won with, lost with, laughed with and cried with over the last decade at Borussia. I will also miss the games at a packed BORUSSIA-PARK, of course – I’ll miss the amazing fans and their unconditional support for Borussia."

Oscar Wendt spent ten full years with the Foals. The left-back moved to Mönchengladbach in the summer of 2011 from FC Copenhagen and has since made 238 Bundesliga appearances (16 goals), played in 37 games across European competitions (1 goal) and made 24 appearances in the DFB-Pokal (2 goals). In total, the Swede has made 299 appearances for Borussia so far, scoring a total of 19 goals. "Obviously I am also immensely proud to have been part of this great club’s history," said Wendt.

Back in his home country, the 35-year-old with 28 Sweden caps under his belt will play for IFK Göteborg as of next season. Wendt began his professional career with the Swedish top-flight side 16 years ago before moving to Denmark for FC Copenhagen in 2006/07. "Being able to play football for this club again, the club I supported as a kid, the club where I became a pro, means a great deal to me," said Wendt. "Until then, however, I am looking forward to my remaining time with Borussia."
