Foals beat FC Bayern Munich in friendly

The Foals came out on top in their fourth friendly of preseason, beating FC Bayern Munich 2-0. Hannes Wolf and U23 talent Michael Wentzel scored the goals for Borussia.

In the fourth friendly of the 2021/22 preseason, the Foals travelled to the Allianz Arena to face FC Bayern Munich. Stefan Lainer, who was pencilled in to play right-back for Borussia, had to be scratched at short notice after suffering an issue during the warm-up. Andreas Poulsen was drafted in as a late replacement. A rapid tempo developed during the first 20 minutes with the hosts enjoying the lion’s share of possession. The Foals found it hard to piece together dangerous forays into the opposition half although Bayern also struggled to threaten Tobias Sippel’s goal during the opening half hour. Both teams then began to craft goalscoring chances but the deadlock would hold until the break. After the change of ends, the Foals began to pile on the pressure and went 1-0 ahead thanks to a volleyed effort from Hannes Wolf. After making eight changes in the 72nd minute, Borussia’s youngsters continued to play on the front foot. Michael Wentzel of the Gladbach U23s capped off the game with a second goal fifteen minutes from time.

Christoph Kramer played the holding role in midfield behind Patrick Herrmann, Hannes Wolf, László Bénes and Keanan Bennetts. U23 striker Mika Schroers was the lone man up front.

The match came too soon for EURO 2020 participants Yann Sommer, Nico Elvedi (both Switzerland), Matthias Ginter, Florian Neuhaus, Jonas Hofmann (all Germany) and Marcus Thuram (France). Gladbach head coach Adi Hütter also had to do without the injured Manu Koné (medial collateral ligament injury), Breel Embolo (thigh muscle/tendon injury), Denis Zakaria (coronavirus infection), Alassane Plea (knee capsule injury), Ramy Bensebaini (thigh muscle injury), Mamadou Doucouré (rehab after torn Achilles tendon) and Lars Stindl (torn lateral knee ligament).

Six U23 players made the squad in Per Lockl, Michel Lieder, Michael Wentzel, Luiz Skraback, Mika Schroers and Conor Noß while Moustafa Moustafa and Yvandro Borges Sanches were available from Borussia’s U19s.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

29’: Scally dribbles past three opponents down the right before playing a nice one-two with Schroers and taking the shot on from seven yards. The ball goes wide of the left post.

31’: Tillmann goes to ground in the box after a tangle with Beyer, but the referee waves play on. The ball reaches Zirkzee at the other end but the Dutchman can only hit the side netting.

39’: Nianzou gets on the end of a free-kick but can’t quite control the ball as he would have liked - his effort goes wide to the right of the goal.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

53’: Tillmann plays the ball towards goal from a tight angle. Sippel can’t make the ball stick and lets it spill in front of him. He grabs hold of the ball and holds it tight at the second attempt.

56’: Poulsen sends in a cross from the left but Herrmann’s header flies over the bar.

59': Kramer plays the ball square for Scally, who crosses from the right. Wolf is there to capitalise, hitting the ball on the volley and sending it into the far corner from close range. 1-0!

73’: Noß charges towards goal but shoots at goalkeeper Hoffmann from close in.

76’:Noß plays it into the box from the angle. Hoffmann can't turn it home but the ball rolls towards the back stick. Wentzel is there to meet it and forces it over the line for 2-0!

85’: Booth has a go from 20 yards. Sippel dives to tip the deflected effort around the post.
