“It’s a big relief” – #BMGDSC reaction

We gathered the reaction from the coaches and Borussia players after Sunday night’s 3-1 win over Arminia Bielefeld.

Matthias Ginter: The win is a big relief. It wasn’t an easy game as Bielefeld really fought hard. Our quickfire double tipped the match in our favour though. We knew that we needed more speed and movement if we were going to offer more of a threat, and our second and third goals show that it’s been worth working on that in training. The switch to a back-three helped us with that too, although we work well in both systems. I’m happy to be back following my coronavirus infection, but after ten days of self-isolating, I’m pretty beat now.

Yann Sommer: It’s an important win for us. It was a hard-fought and high intensity match with a lot of physical duels. Bielefeld came at us well and we didn’t start strongly, but we grew into the game. The match was quite open for a while until we managed to score two goals in quick succession. Lars Stindl is vital for us. He’s in the right place at the right time and delivers in crucial situations. It’s important to have these positive experiences like today – it’s key for our character and self-confidence. We have to keep going now and have a good week of training so that we’re ready to go again next weekend.

Jordan Beyer: It’s never easy against Bielefeld. I think we deserved to take the lead and then we were unlucky to conceded right on half time. It was a bad time to let in the equaliser, but we managed to recover and came back to win. We were more clinical with our chances in the second half and we deserved to win in the end. The atmosphere in the stadium was world-class. It was amazing to play in front of so many fans again making an incredible noise. That’s what you play football for. I hope that we can play in front of a full house again soon if the situation allows.

Adi Hütter: It was a hard-fought victory and one we can be pleased with. We of course went into the game as favourites, but you could see that Bielefeld have been in good form of late; they made life difficult for us. I was annoyed that we weren’t ahead at half time – we needed to be smarter at a time like that. You could sense that our heads dropped a little after Arminia’s equaliser. The substitutions really helped us. We had some really nice link-up play in attack – our second and third goals were well worked. We’re a long way from perfection still, but we gave it our all for 90 minutes. Ultimately, today was a little weight off our shoulders.

Arminia Bielefeld head coach Frank Kramer: I thought that we showed a lot of courage and played some good football. Unfortunately, we didn’t make the best of our attacks and wasted some decent chances. We went toe to toe with a strong Borussia Mönchengladbach side, but when you’re that close, you have to make it count. We can’t get caught up and allow ourselves to open up at the back like that. Nevertheless, we stuck to our own game to the end, so it’s a shame that we didn’t get anything for it. We can certainly kick on from that performance in the coming games though.

Yann Sommer: "Lars Stindl is vital for us"
Adi Hütter: "Today was a little weight off our shoulders"
