Borussia claim big home win over Fürth

Matchday 12 in the Bundesliga provided a well-deserved 4-0 win over Greuther Fürth, with Jonas Hofmann (2), Florian Neuhaus and Alassane Plea on the scoresheet for Borussia on Saturday afternoon.

38,621 fans were in attendance at BORUSSIA-PARK for what turned out to be a one-sided affair between the Foals and the site sitting bottom of the table. First-half goals from Jonas Hofmann (28’), Florian Neuhaus (28’) and Alassane Plea (43’) put Gladbach in control before a second from Hofmann after the break (57’) put the result beyond any doubt.

TEAM NEWS

Three players came into the starting XI compared to the 1-1 draw with Mainz prior to the international break: Patrick Herrmann, Florian Neuhaus and Lars Stindl were brought in for Luca Netz and the injured pair Nico Elvedi and Breel Embolo. Yann Sommer was in goal behind a back-three of Ramy Bensebaini, Denis Zakaria and Matthias Ginter. Joe Scally and Patrick Herrmann were in the left and right wing-back positions respectively, with Manu Koné and Florian Neuhaus paired in midfield. The front-three was made up of Lars Stindl, Jonas Hofmann and Alassane Plea.

The Foals were without Nico Elvedi (ankle), Breel Embolo, Jordan Beyer (both hamstring), Tony Jantschke (facial fractures), Christoph Kramer (thigh), Stefan Lainer (match fitness following broken ankle) and Mamadou Doucouré (rehab following Achilles’ tear).

FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS

9’: The early opener for Borussia! Stindl’s ball in behind is perfect for Hofmann to run onto and drill past the onrushing goalkeeper. 1-0 to Gladbach.

15’: Almost a second! Bensebaini’s delivery over the top of the defence is taken in his stride by Herrmann, but his shot from outside the box is blocked by Funk.

21’: Scally runs at his man from the left-hand side of the box and drops his shoulder to create space for a shot on his left, which Funk is able to tip behind.

28’: A second Borussia goal! Funk mis-kicks his clearance straight to Neuhaus 30 yards out and his first-time finish flies along the ground and into the bottom corner. 2-0 to Gladbach.

36’: One-way traffic here. Plea brilliantly flicks the ball on to find Stindl in the box, but the captain’s strike rattles the post.

41’: Ginter joins an attack and feeds Plea, whose shot comes off the fingertips of the goalkeeper and trickles just wide of the goal.

43’: Stunning goal! Plea plays a one-two with Stindl, before unleashing a wonderful curling shot from the edge of the box that sails into the back of the net. 3-0 to Gladbach.

SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS

51’: Stindl lays the ball off for Neuhaus to strike on the volley, but Funk is able to hold on.

57’: That’s four! Stindl wins the ball on the halfway line and leads the breakaway. His well-timed pass has Hofmann in one against one once more and he doesn’t make any mistake this time either. 4-0 to Gladbach.

65’: Ginter rises highest from a corner and forces a good reaction save from Funk.

71’: Again it’s Ginter involved in the final third, trying his luck from just inside the box, but again the Fürth keeper is in the way.

90’: What a debut that would have been. Substitute Conor Noß cuts inside onto his favoured left foot in the penalty area and looks to curl a shot into the far, top corner – it’s only inches away from a wonderful goal.
