Borussia beaten 3-2 by Frankfurt

The penultimate matchday before the winter break saw Borussia Mönchengladbach suffer a fourth consecutive defeat, losing 3-2 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Around 10,000 fans were at BORUSSIA-PARK and they saw the Foals start strongly, with Florian Neuhaus opening the scoring in style after just six minutes. Adi Hütter’s side were on top in the first half, but a stoppage-time equaliser from Rafael Borré meant the sides went into the break level. The game became a little chaotic after the restart. Frankfurt took the lead through Jesper Lindström in the 50th minute and Ramy Bensebaini equalised from the spot four minutes later, only for Eintracht to immediately restore their advantage when Daichi Kamada finished off a counter (55’). The visitors were reduced to ten men when Tuta was shown a second yellow with 20 minutes to go, but Borussia were unable to turn their numerical advantage into an equaliser.

TEAM NEWS

Adi Hütter made four changes from the recent 4-1 loss in Leipzig, as Luca Netz, László Bénes, Florian Neuhaus and Alassane Plea replaced Nico Elvedi (stomach bug), Jonas Hofmann (knee), Lars Stindl (suspended) and Marcus Thuram. Yann Sommer was behind a back-three of Matthias Ginter, Denis Zakaria and Ramy Bensebaini, with Netz and Joe Scally playing at left and right wing-back respectively. Neuhaus joined Manu Koné in central midfield, while Neuhaus, Plea and Breel Embolo formed the attack.

Apart from Elvedi, Hofmann and Stindl, the Foals were also without Jordan Beyer (recovery from thigh injury), Tony Jantschke (match fitness following facial fracture) and Mamadou Doucouré (recovery from Achilles’ tear).

FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS

6’: An early opener for the Foals! Netz sends a cross to the far post, where Scally cleverly nods the ball down for Neuhaus to take a touch and slam the ball into the bottom corner. 1-0 to Gladbach.

18’: Embolo slips the ball behind the backline to Scally, who is denied one-on-one by Trapp. The flag does eventually go up for offside, however.

26’: Plea takes a through ball from Neuhaus in his stride and unleashes a powerful shot from an angle that Trapp is able to parry behind.

45’: Frankfurt level things up on the stroke of half time. Zakaria loses the ball driving out of defence, the Eagles counter quickly and Lindström’s cross is finished in the six-yard box by Borré. 1-1.

SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS

50’: Turnaround complete. Ndicka gets to the by-line and pulls the ball back for Lindström to bury from twelve yards. 2-1 to Frankfurt.

54’: A quick response from the Foals! Koné is tripped in the box and the referee awards a penalty. Bensebaini steps up and coolly converts. 2-2.

55’: Eintracht’s lead is restored immediately. Borré puts Kamada through on goal and his low shot has enough power to beat Sommer. 3-2 to Frankfurt.

59’: Fortune for the Foals as Lindström’s shot from inside the box rattles the outside of the post.

60’: Another big chance for Frankfurt. This time Sommer is in the way as Lindström looks to finish off Rode’s lay-off.

70’: Tuta goes in too hard on Embolo and he’s already on a yellow. Referee Petersen gives him his marching orders and Frankfurt are down to ten men.

79’: Kramer heads the ball on goal from Ginter’s cross, but it’s too central and Trapp can gather the shot.

82’: Borussia are upping the pressure with numbers in the box. Kramer’s cross finds Ginter and his header forces a smart save from Trapp.

89’: Ginter lines up a powerful strike from distance that it tipped over the bar by the Frankfurt goalkeeper.

90+3’: Herrmann unleashes a spectacular volley that was destined for the top corner if not for a fingertip save from Trapp.
