“An incredibly bitter defeat” - #BMGFCU reaction

We gathered the thoughts of the players and coaches following Borussia’s 2-1 home defeat to 1. FC Union Berlin on Saturday afternoon.

Nico Elvedi: It’s an incredibly bitter defeat. Union had two dangerous moments and scored two goals. We went behind from a very unfortunate penalty. That’s the fourth one in the last three games now – we need to be more alert. We got back into the game well and scored the equaliser fairly quickly. We played well in the second half and were mostly in control, but we ended up conceding a goal right at the end out of nothing – that’s typical of our situation right now. We’ve got 14 days before our next game; that gives us time to analyse everything from top to bottom and then we have to go again.

Florian Neuhaus: We had step it up a gear compared to the cup game in Hannover, no question. We went into the match with a clear plan, but then we ended up going behind from a penalty out of nothing and were chasing the game for a bit. We came back into it well though and got the equaliser. We spoke about what we wanted to do in the second half and we kept pushing, but it felt as though we didn’t carry enough of a threat. Union then had basically their first shot on goal in the second half and won the game. It’s too easy to score goals against us at the moment and we don’t offer enough of a threat either. We make it too easy for our opponents to pick up points against us. We don’t have a game next weekend, so we have to use this time to work hard on ourselves. We know the situation is very difficult, but we want to come out the other side stronger.

Adi Hütter: Union Berlin scored two goals from their only chances and took home all three points. I don’t think our performance warranted us leaving empty-handed. The result is incredibly frustrating as it doesn’t reflect how we played. The team did a lot of what we were hoping from them. There were more energetic than in the Hannover game and didn’t give much away. The team played with a lot of discipline tactically throughout the 90 minutes, put in a lot of hard yards and played some really good football at times, particularly in the first half. Nevertheless, it hasn’t counted for anything, and that is incredibly frustrating, but it’s a performance we can build on.

Union Berlin head coach Urs Fischer: I thought that we started well. Things were looking good in the opening 20, 25 minutes and we didn’t allow Gladbach many chances. We had our moments going forward too. We then stopped pressing all of a sudden and didn’t have that pressure behind the ball. We gave our opponents too much time and space and then you saw their quality shine through. Gladbach had more possession in the second half and had several chances to go in front. The fact that we’re sitting here as the fortunate winners fits in well with both clubs’ situations right now.
