Borussia suffer heavy 5-1 loss in Bremen

Borussia were beaten 5-1 away to SV Werder Bremen on matchday 8. Marcus Thuram got the only goal for the Foals on Saturday night.

41,200 fans were in attendance at the Weserstadion to see Werder completely dominate the first half. Their first two attacks resulted in two goals, one apiece for Niclas Füllkrug (5’) and Marvin Ducksch (8’). The promoted side then added further goals before the break via Füllkrug (13’) and then an own goal by Ramy Bensebaini (37’). SVW took their foot off the gas in the second half, allowing Marcus Thuram to get a consolation for Borussia (63’). Mitchell Weiser got the final goal with 17 minutes left to play.

TEAM NEWS

Head coach Daniel Farke went with the same side that defeated RB Leipzig 3-0 at home last time out. Joe Scally, Marvin Friedrich, Nico Elvedi and Ramy Bensebaini started in defence in front of Yann Sommer. Julian Weigl partnered Manu Koné in central midfield, with Jonas Hofmann, Christoph Kramer and Lars Stindl beginning behind Marcus Thuram in attacking midfield.

Alassane Plea was named on the bench after spending the last four weeks on the sidelines with an injury. Tobias Sippel also recovered in time from a shoulder problem to take his place among the substitutes. Borussia were once again without Florian Neuhaus (partial PCL rupture), Ko Itakura (partial MCL rupture) and Hannes Wolf (shoulder).

FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS

5’: An early lead for Werder! Schmid’s cross to the back post is converted by Füllkrug. 1-0.

8’: The hosts strike again. Schmid gets in behind, but Sommer comes out well to deny him. The ball ricochets to Ducksch, with the goal at his mercy, and he makes no mistake. 2-0.

13’: Incredible. Bensebaini’s clearance from Pavlenka’s long ball goes through to Ducksch. The striker then squares it across the box to Füllkrug, in so much space, and he easily gets his second of the night. 3-0.

16’: Another good chance for Werder. Jung is free at the far post and gets a shot away, but it’s straight at Sommer.

17’: Borussia’s first decent opportunity. Kramer volleys narrowly wide from a central position.

19’: The next chance for the Foals. Scally is in behind after a good ball. Instead of squaring it for Thuram, the American takes a shot himself and is denied by Pavlenka.

29’:  Ducksch is unmarked from a cross and heads powerfully towards goal, missing the target by just a few centimetres.

37’: Werder find the net once again. Ducksch crosses into the box from the left and Bensebaini diverts the ball into his own net. 4-0.

43’: Scally picks out Stindl in the box. His effort is beaten away by Pavlenka.

SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS

49’: The Foals miss a great chance to get one back. Weigl’s ball through finds Thuram and he’s 1v1 with the Bremen goalkeeper. Unfortunately, the French attacker drags his shot just wide.

52’: Stindl tries his luck from just outside the box, however it’s no issue for Pavlenka.

59’: Füllkrug dinks a cross into the six-yard area and Weiser heads it onto the post.

63’: A goal for Borussia. Stindl threads it through for Thuram, who rounds Pavlenka and does the rest to reduce the deficit. 4-1.

67’: A Thuram backheel finds Hofmann. He pulls the trigger, only to hit the post. It wouldn’t have counted anyway as Thuram was in an offside position.

73’: Bremen restore their four-goal lead. Füllkrug lifts the ball up in the air for Weiser, who volleys it powerfully past Sommer. 5-1.

85’: The final moment of note in the game as Pavlenka beats away Herrmann’s rocket and then holds onto Friedrich’s header.
