Borussia beaten 3-1 at home by Frankfurt

Matchday 11 in the Bundesliga ended in a 3-1 loss for Borussia Mönchengladbach at home to Eintracht Frankfurt, with Marcus Thuram’s second-half goal too little, too late.

Around 53,000 spectators at BORUSSIA-PARK saw a clinical display from the visitors in the first half. Eric Dina Ebimbe’s goal was sandwiched by a Jesper Lindstrøm brace to hand the Eagles a three-goal lead at the break, although Borussia allowed a number of decent chances to go begging. The Foals found more solidity in the second 45 and got one goal back through Marcus Thuram, but ultimately couldn’t threaten enough to turn the result around.

TEAM NEWS

Daniel Farke was forced into changes from the midweek cup game in Darmstadt, with Yann Sommer and Jonas Hofmann replaced by Tobias Sippel and a fit again Christoph Kramer. Two more alterations saw Ramy Bensebaini and Lars Stindl return to the starting line-up, while Luca Netz and Nathan Ngoumou dropped to the bench. Bensebaini, Nico Elvedi, Marvin Friedrich and Joe Scally made up the back-four in front of Sippel, Manu Koné and Julian Weigl partnered up in midfield, and Marcus Thuram led the line, supported by Stindl, Kramer and Alassane Plea.

Apart from Hofmann (dislocated shoulder) and Sommer (ankle), the Foals were also without Stefan Lainer (stomach bug) for the meeting with Frankfurt. They joined Florian Neuhaus, Ko Itakura (both knee) and Hannes Wolf (shoulder) on the injury list.

FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS

6’: Kolo Muani plays the ball into Lindstrøm, who is lucky to keep the ball after Koné’s tackle bounces off Elvedi and falls back to him, allowing him to slot home past Sippel. 1-0 to Frankfurt.

8’: Almost a quickfire double, but Kolo Muani’s shot zips wide of the target.

9’: Close to a Borussia equaliser. Marcus nicks the ball ahead of the last man and is away, however, Trapp makes the save one-on-one.

22’: Plea gets to the byline and pulls the ball back to Kramer. His cross to the back post finds an unmarked Stindl. His volley has power, but not the accuracy to beat the Frankfurt goalkeeper.

28’: Christopher Lenz’s corner is met by Dina Ebimbe and his header leaves Sippel rooted to the spot. 2-0 to Frankfurt.

31’: That would have been a good response, but Scally’s cross to Thuram is just a little too high for him to keep his header down.

38’: Kolo Muani latches onto a long ball and shoots from a tight angle. Sippel stands his ground and makes the save.

45’: Clinical counter. A loose pass from Weigl is picked off and Kolo Muani can drive forward with the ball. He finds Lindstrøm, who beats Sippel for his second goal of the game. 3-0 to Frankfurt.

SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS

64’: Plea’s cross into the box finds Thuram, but he can’t find the target with his shot.

72’: A goal back for Borussia. Plea wins the ball high up the pitch and quickly moves it onto Thuram, who is able to squeeze it past Trapp this time. 3-1 to Frankfurt.

76’: The match is suspended after a cable breaks off the camera above the pitch and officials come on to remove it.

83’: Play is resumed.

86’: Marvin Friedrich has a chance to shoot when Plea’s free kick drops to him in the box, but his effort is blocked.

89’: Sippel holds on to a low, long-range strike from Lenz.
