Stindl: "It was an absolute honour"

Captain Lars Stindl speaks in an interview about his feelings ahead of his final competitive game in a Borussia shirt and his connection with the club and the city of Mönchengladbach.

Lars, eight years at Borussia are coming to an end for you on Saturday. What is your frame of mind ahead of the game against Augsburg?

Stindl: Since I announced my decision that I was leaving Borussia at the end of the season, I have just been trying to enjoy every game and every training session and take it all in. Even if the situation at the moment isn’t easy, I am really looking forward to being able to contest a Bundesliga game at BORUSSIA-PARK with the boys on a Saturday afternoon one final time. I am trying to approach it with as little emotion as possible, even if I know that it might become emotional.

You are not only captain of the team but also for the fans, who have regularly shown their love for you in the stands. How has it felt to see their reaction after you announced you decision?

Stindl: It’s been really crazy. I have always felt good here at Borussia, it’s been a good fit since day one. The amount of positivity and love that I have received in the last few weeks is simply unbelievable. It makes me incredibly proud and is a really nice feeling. I’m pleased that the fans think so positively of me, that is something really special and is something that I personally place a lot of value on.

Borussia and the Lower Rhine have become a second home for you…

Stindl: Obviously you always know where you come from and where your home is, but Borussia has also become home for me and I feel completely at home in the Lower Rhine. I have felt totally at home here through all of my years here. The birth of my children here will always connect me with the area. I am also incredibly proud that I was also able to have such an amazing time here from the sporting side of things. I am proud to have been a part of this club and that I have been able to pay people back for some of the trust that has been placed in me.

Lars Stindl

You have already said that it is an absolute honour to be captain of a football club. How did you feel at the time when you took over the armband at Borussia?

Stindl: I wanted to give myself a few days initially to think about it. I knew from my time at Hannover the responsibility that this role entails and that there will also be moments that are not so easy. You have to be aware of that and be able to deal with that. Having then thought about it, I soon agreed to do it, and that I would give it all my energy, passion and commitment.

You've done it gloriously...

Stindl: I have always tried to stay as authentic as possible. I’ve wanted to integrate my communication style, my sense of responsibility and the attitude that I have every day. This has seemingly worked really well. It was a true honour to have been the captain of Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Finally, what is your favourite moment to look back on after eight years at Borussia?

Stindl: There are so many special moments. We’ve played in the Champions League three times in the last eight years. With Manchester City, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Juventus, we had unbelievably exciting draws and were able to fight against the Creme de la Creme of European football. The games in the Europa League, like the legendary comeback in Florence with my hat-trick were also absolutely one of a kind. I will never forget these games and countless other brilliant moments.
