Can anyone have possibly forgotten the former driving force behind our club, Helmut Grashoff? The man with the trademark pipe who was at the Borussia helm for thirty years and whose character has left its mark on the club to this day.
Just on the club? Not at all. Helmut Grashoff is also the father of the club's supporter liaison work, which has been up and running now for more than 20 years. He was the first to place his faith in the ability of the Borussia fans to 'police' themselves. Even back in the 1980s, he made the "By Fans for Fans" principle a cornerstone of Borussia’s supporter liaison efforts. Borussia were the first club to employ a full-time supporter liaison officer (well before it was a licence criterion laid down by the German Football League and the German Football Association). And not just any old SLO either. To do justice to the above principle, the club made sure the person appointed was an active member of the fan base (Theo Weiss from Berlin, who shortly afterwards bequeathed the job to Holger Spiecker). In 1988, Grashoff then helped to establish the independent Fanprojekt Mönchengladbach e.V. [registered association].
This laid the foundation for the stable system built upon the 'dual-pillar principle' that still applies today: supporter liaison by the club and external liaison work by the MG fan project, which these days is called "FP-MG, the supporters club by fans for fans"!
The two supporter liaison arms not only operate alongside each other, they are also closely interlinked and form a single unit in the interest of the fans! This is because the interests of our fans are our sole concern. It is therefore no surprise that the SLOs come from the active fan base/fan project and continue to hold positions on the management board of the fan project on a voluntary and unpaid basis!
The full-time SLOs at Borussia Moenchengladbach are:
Thomas 'Tower' Weinmann
and Jennifer Frankeser
