Borussia have secured the services of Red Bull Salzburg defender Martin Hinteregger until the end of the current season, and have the option to purchase the 23-year-old central defender should they choose to activate the clause.

Martin Hinteregger, who boasts ten appearances for Austria so far in his career, will travel with sporting director Max Eberl and team manager Steffen Korell to Belek following his medical check – where the Fohlenelf are involved in a training camp in preparation for the next part of the season. “We are of course very pleased to have secured a top talent, and that we have the option to sign him permanently at the end of his loan. Martin will be able to help the team immediately due to his quality as a player and our current personnel situation. It is important that he is able to join up with the rest of the boys at the training camp," said Eberl. Hinteregger has played a total of 138 games in the Austrian Bundesliga (five goals) and 42 in Europe (six goals).

In Salzburg since 2006

The central defender transferred from his hometown club SGA Sirnitz to Red Bull Salzburg at the age of 13, and celebrated his professional debut in the 2010/11 season. The then 18-year-old went on to make 22 appearances in the league during the season, and played four games in Europe. Furthermore, he made his debut for the national U21 side, and went on to make a total of 13 appearances. In the following season, Hinteregger became a regular in Salzburg’s back line, most frequently deployed as a left back, and played a large part in their winning of both the league and the cup. In the UEFA Europa League Play-Off second leg against Omonia Nikosia, he scored his first goal as a professional. Hinteregger made a total of 35 competitive appearances over the course of the season, and captained the side on three occasions.

He did not give up his starting place in the back line the next season either. Under Roger Schmidt, he became a formidable force at centre half, and due to his qualities, was often moved up to central defensive midfield. Although the 2012/13 season ended without a title, they laid the basis for future success. In the following term, Hinteregger cemented his position as the leader of their defence, in a team which progressed to the quarterfinal of the UEFA Europa League, and again claimed the league and cup double. Hinteregger was also able to celebrate his debut in the Austrian first team, playing the entire 90 minutes in a 1-0 win over USA in a friendly on 19th November 2013.

In the season just gone, Red Bull Salzburg were able to successfully defend both of their national titles, something no Austrian team had ever previously achieved. Hinteregger again confirmed his position as a key player in the side and a leader on the pitch. He has also been a crucial player so far this term, but has opted for a move away from Austria.
