Raffael has extended his contract at Borussia by one year until June 2019. The 31-year-old’s deal was originally set to run until 2017.
Borussia can continue to plan with their top performers on board. VfL have prematurely extended Raffael’s contract by an extra year until June 2019. The forward, who was born in the Brazilian coastal city of Fortaleza, left home at 18 to join FC Chiasso in Switzerland. After spells with FC Zürich, Hertha BSC and Dynamo Kiev, from whom he was loaned out to Schalke 04, he joined Borussia in summer 2013. In his three seasons at the club to date, Raffael has always indisputably been a top performer. He has been directly involved in 70 goals in his 116 competitive games: scoring 44 and setting up 26.
In his first season with VfL, he featured in all Bundesliga games and netted 15 goals – the highest tally in his career to date. Additionally, the technically-gifted player regularly set up his teammates, providing seven assists. Raffael maintained his high standards in 2014/15, scoring 12 goals and having a hand in two further goals in 21 Bundesliga games. He also bagged two goals and four assists in nine UEFA Europa League games. The 31-year-old was Borussia’s top points scorer in the Bundesliga last term with 13 goals and 10 assists. Only Robert Lewandowski, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Thomas Müller did better in the league.
