The Slovakian U21 squad continued their perfect start to their 2019 European Championship qualification campaign thanks to László Bénes. He got the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Northern Ireland.
Yesterday’s win was their second in a row after a 2-1 triumph in Estonia on Friday. They now stand at the top of group 2 with six points. László Bénes proved to be the difference in central midfield, after playing the whole game and scoring the winner in the 61st minute. The Slovakians will face Iceland on the on the 5th October and Spain on 10th October in their next two games.
USA scrap for a point without Johnson
The US men’s national team managed to rescue a point against Honduras thanks to Bobby Wood’s 85th minute strike, with Gladbach’s Fabian Johnson forced to stay on the bench for the whole length of the 1-1 draw. With two games yet to be played, the Americans are in 4th place. They can’t guarantee automatic qualification if things stay that way, and will instead be forced into a play-off. Their last two games are against Panama and Trinidad & Tobago on the 6th and 10th of October respectively.
Cuisance and France U19s lose in friendly
Elsewhere, the France U19 national team lost a friendly in Morocco 3-2. They couldn’t replicate their 2-0 success from only a few days prior as Moussa Diaby’s 20th minute opener was quickly cancelled out by three goals in reply. Myziane Maolida could only cut the difference to one in the 75th minute, and the game ended 3-2.
