We spoke to Vincenzo Grifo about yesterday’s friendly against Ajax and the upcoming match against Bayern Munich.
Vincenzo, did you enjoy yesterday’s game in Amsterdam?
Grifo: Yes, it was a great occasion to be a part of. I had never played in the Amsterdam Arena. It is a lovely stadium and we played against a top team. It was quite an open game which was fun to be involved in. But it is of course a shame that we lost.
How do you think the game went?
Grifo: Since we’ve got Bayern on Saturday, we went into the game wanting to be compact. We wanted to replicate the way we’re going to have to play on Saturday. Ajax played well. After the equaliser we could have maybe gone on to score a few more. But overall it was a good friendly and test of our abilities.
Can you draw more attention to yourself in a friendly than in training?
Grifo: A friendly is always quite different to a training session. In training you always have to show your qualities and put in the work. But playing 90 minutes is good for players who haven’t had many minutes so far this season. And it is obviously good fun to play against a different team.
You’ve already mentioned the Bayern game on Saturday. On Matchday 12, the team won 4-2 in Berlin. How much confidence will that give you for the game against Bayern?
Grifo: The win in Berlin is definitely big for us. We want to play as well as we did in Berlin against Bayern. We need a big performance against them to get something from the match. We are playing at home so we have our fans behind us. We want to play to our full potential and we’ll give it our all.
What are your thoughts on Bayern’s development in the last few weeks?
Grifo: Bayern have stabilised a lot under Jupp Heynckes and they’ve got their swagger back. They are enjoying their football once again and it shows in their results. We have to be really alert. Bayern are Bayern, every mistake we make will be punished.
