We gathered the reaction from the players and coaches after Borussia’s 4-2 loss to Hertha on Saturday.
Matthias Ginter: We simply didn’t get into our rhythm at all today. Something was off from the very start. We made too many silly mistakes, gave the ball away too easily, too often, and weren’t physical enough. We were lucky to take the lead, and then we managed to concede almost the same goal twice in a matter of minutes. We made it far too easy for Hertha. We invited them to use the flanks, but to be fair to them, they did a very good job. When you concede four goals away from home, you can’t expect to come away with anything.
Patrick Herrmann: It was a very poor performance. We were too late to close players down and gave them too many chances. All four goals were avoidable. If you afford your opponents that many opportunities, then it’s only a matter of time until the ball finds the back of the net. I was going for the ball when I caught Grujic, but I was a split-second too late and caught him badly. I’m really sorry to have injured him, but I can’t change that now. I never intended to hurt him.
Yann Sommer: We didn’t have answers to Hertha’s playing style today. We conceded four goals and they were all given away too easily. Almost every cross led to a chance. We simply didn’t defend well enough; we were too far away from our man and didn’t get stuck in. We weren’t able to fix that during the match either for some reason. We need to analyse what went wrong and then start looking ahead. We already have a game against Frankfurt on Wednesday.
Dieter Hecking: We deserved to lose today. We didn’t defend well at all and were up against a good Hertha team. And while we managed to take the lead, we can’t be conceding an equaliser straightaway like that. Then we got back in it at 3-2 and before we can think about mounting a comeback, we go 4-2 down. We can only blame ourselves today. We simply weren’t incisive enough defensively. Berlin pointed out some issues for us today and we have to work them out.
Hertha coach Pal Dardai: We played very well, particularly in the first half. We ought to have scored more goals when we were on top to be honest. We defended a little too deep for ten minutes in the second half, but otherwise it was a good all-round performance with plenty of goals and a brilliant atmosphere.
