We gathered the thoughts from the players and coaches following Borussia’s convincing 4-0 home victory against 1. FSV Mainz 05.
Lars Stindl: It was a very good performance today from us. We knew it wouldn’t be easy and it would be a test of our patience. It was also difficult to settle into the match. We had a couple of chances early on but we hit our stride as quickly as we have in recent weeks. After half time, we had to step up our game once again and we made some very good movement going forward, leading to a thoroughly deserved victory. Jonas’ hat-trick reflects his current form and his strong performance. I’m pleased for him that he was rewarded with some goals today.
Yann Sommer: We played very well for long periods of today’s match. At half time, the coach said that we should shift up a gear in the second half and we managed to do that. Our second-half performance was particularly pleasing. We didn’t allow our opponents any space on the pitch and they ran out of steam when we added the other goals. It’s really nice for Jonas to have scored three goals. Most importantly, this is important for the team. He deserved to score a hat-trick and played very well not just today, but also in previous weeks. It was a great team performance. It is always important to play well at home on the back of an away victory.
Thorgan Hazard: It was a great evening for the team, the club, Jonas and myself. Jonas covered a lot of ground today and played really well. The three goals were really important for him, However, the most important thing is that we won the match. We certainly wanted to carry our good performance from the victory in Munich into today’s match and we achieved that. Today’s victory is especially important for our self-confidence. We now need to rest well, work hard together as a squad and focus on our next match in Freiburg. It will be a difficult match with a lot of battles up and down the pitch.
Sporting director Max Eberl: I have already glanced at the Bundesliga table and it’s a real sight for sore eyes. After the victory against Bayern, which sometimes can cause teams to suddenly lose their winning ways, it was important for us to bring the emotion and the fight from that performance to tonight’s match and to use it to our advantage. The team fully deserved to win tonight. We are currently playing with a lot of confidence and you can see that. We are also fortunate not to have many injuries right now, so we have a lot of competition within the squad. No-one is guaranteed to start. Everyone must give everything they have in training. The result of this is evident on the pitch. I am particularly pleased for Jonas Hofmann. He always puts in a strong performance, but he has really found his feet this season. In recent years, we have found it difficult to win in Freiburg and that’s why we need to prepare for this match thoroughly so that we can win there too.
Head coach Dieter Hecking: We are very glad to have won this match against difficult opponents. We may have played some nice football tonight, but there’s a lot of hard work behind that. We knew that Mainz would be very organised in defence and patient in finding space on the pitch when it was difficult to establish their game. At the start of the match, we had some good attempts in front of goal but we lacked the intensity necessary to break Mainz down. The three goals we scored after the interval were brilliant. That was very pleasing to see. I am very proud of my team. For me, it is those players who were not involved today and not even in the squad who are now important. These players will continue to train at a high intensity and quality and ensure that everyone must give everything they have to earn a place in the matchday squad.
