We summed up the reactions of the players and both coaches after the 2-0 loss in Leipzig.
Tobias Strobl: We conceded two unnecessary goal that we should never give away in the form that we are in. We could have cleared the ball a lot earlier for the first goal. We grew into the game after 15 minutes and started to be a bigger threat going forward but then they scored the second goal which really dented our hopes. We did not give up in the second half but we did not quite manage to create many clear chances. We tried everything but it just was not to be.
Tony Jantschke: Leipzig are a very good team especially when they are all on top form, which was the case today. We have unfortunately given away an early lead three times now and that is far too many. After 20 minutes we grew back into the game and put Leipzig under pressure. We knocked the ball about well and were in total control but we did not take out chances. To concede so close to half time was a sucker punch. Leipzig could then sit back and hit us on the counter attack.
Head coach Dieter Hecking: We contributed our fair share to an entertaining game of football but when you go 1-0 down so early against a team like Leipzig, it is very difficult to recover. Leipzig were the better team in the first 20 minutes. We opened up after then and started to play well but we missed the chances to equalise. We cannot be conceding a goal so close to half time. We controlled the game in the second half but could not create many open chances. We did not find enough openings going forward and therefore have to accept the defeat.
RB Leipzig head coach Ralf Rangnick: You could see out there today that the secret to success is how you operate without the ball. The score could easily have been 4-2 but 2-0 is much better. It was also very obvious today how important key players such as Kampl, Sabitzer and Demme are for us. It was a great team performance against a top team therefore we are even more delighted with the win.
