The first of Borussia’s two friendlies during their training camp in Jerez ended in defeat on Monday afternoon. Denis Zakaria got the Foals ahead, but 1. FC Magdeburg fought back to win 2-1.
2019 got off to a great start for Gladbach, with Denis Zakaria scoring the first goal of the year after only nine minutes. Jonas Hofmann sent the Swiss in behind the defence, and he kept his cool to round the goalkeeper and finish. Borussia were dominating proceedings, but their second-division opponents carried a threat when they got forward and a mix-up at the back allowed Philip Türpitz to level the scores in the 22nd minute. Dieter Hecking’s boys continued to control the match after the interval, but a string of fresh faces also failed to provide the clinical edge. Florian Neuhaus, Josip Drmic and Michaël Cuisance all came close, but it was Magdeburg who found the net, with Manfred Osei Kwadwo heading in the winner on 79 minutes.
