Elvedi: “We found a way through”

Elvedi: “We found a way through”
Nico Elvedi put in a strong defensive performance in Mainz and scored the winning goal.

Nico Elvedi scored the match-winning goal against Mainz and sat down with us to discuss the game.

Nico, how important was the win against Mainz?

Nico Elvedi: Very important. We hadn’t won for four games, so it’s even better that we were able to. Against Mainz, we showed what has made us strong this season: defending together and compactly. We’d been missing that a bit in the past few games.

You didn’t just defend well, you scored the winning goal too – how was that?

Elvedi: I was actually a bit surprised that the ball came to me, but I just shot and I hit the ball well. I’m happy that it went in and I could help the team with a goal. It clicked well in defence too with Tony Jantschke, and we kept a clean sheet. It’s a nice feeling.

Was the good defensive performance a reaction from the team after the recent results?

Elvedi: In the past few weeks, except for the Bayern game, we haven’t played badly, but we’ve made stupid mistakes so conceded goals. That just shouldn’t happen at this level. We’ve looked at and analysed them and the whole team showed the right reaction with some compact defending. It’s nice that we could reward ourselves with the win.

Is this game a starting point for the final sprint this season?

Elvedi: Firstly we’re glad that we took a step forward and got back to winning ways. For where we’ll finish this season, we’ll deal with it when the time comes. We just want to win our games and keep moving forward.

Gladbach host Freiburg in BORUSSIA-PARK this Friday. Will the win in Mainz give the team a boost?

Elvedi: It definitely gives us confidence. We want to go into the international break with a home win against Freiburg.
