Following Gladbach’s victory over Hannover 96, goalkeeper Yann Sommer spoke to borussia.de about his thoughts on the game, captain Lars Stindl’s injury and the end of season run-in.
Yann, after a run of three games without a win, the team finally picked up three points against Hannover. How relieved do you feel?
Sommer: The victory was very important for us after the run of three games. It is a good feeling but also helps your confidence. However, as we had expected, the game was not easy. Hannover are an opponent who have some problems themselves, but are fighting and doing everything they can to improve their situation. Therefore, we had to battle hard for the victory, and thankfully we came home with the three points.
Also, you and your teammates finally managed to keep a clean sheet. Did that provide the foundation for a victory?
Sommer: I think the clean sheet played a large part of it, yes. Simply put, we played well and defended strongly, and remained focused until the final whistle, even when they had some good chances. Of course, it would have been better to have been able to get a second goal, in order to have a bit more security in the game. However, we’re pleased to go away as winners and finally secure three points.
The injury to captain Lars Stindl was definitely a dampener on an otherwise fine day…
Sommer: Lars’ injury is of course very serious – it is a very nasty situation. Luckily I didn’t see exactly what happened but we realized straight away that something serious had happened. For the team, it is very disappointing that our captain will miss the rest of the season. We wish him all the best and hope that he can be back amongst us as soon as possible.
Raffael managed to secure victory for you after missing a lot of football through injury. What did you make of his performance?
Sommer: I was very happy to see Raffael score again. The goal was very important for him personally, but also for the whole team. Raffael is a very important player for us, because he has already scored so many goals for us in the past. After his long spell out with injury, it is a very important that he is back and was able to score the winner. He had a great game and even came close to getting a second goal. I think he will play a very important role for us in the season run-in.
How important is the victory with regards to the end-of-season goal of achieving European football?
Sommer: The season is slowly drawing to a close and we only have five games left. Every victory matters. We have to fight to be in Europe next season because there are many other teams who are playing well and are hot on our tails. Now we have to build on the Hannover victory and continue picking up points. We know that everything is still possible and we will do everything to reach our goal.”
