As part of the club’s China Tour, Borussia faced Chinese Super League side Guangzhou R&F and came out on top after a clear 4-0 win.
In front of a crowd of almost 7,000 in the Yuexiuhsan Stadium in Guangzhou, Gladbach took an early lead when Florian Neuhaus found the back of the net in the 2nd minute. The superior Foals doubled their lead in the 13th minute through Josip Drmic and went even further ahead after a good half an hour thanks to Alassane Plea’s goal. Borussia had other chances to increase the lead further but were unable to capitalise. After a number of substitutions and strong rain in the second half, Gladbach lost some of the dominance that they had shown in the first. Whilst still in control of the match, Borussia’s game lacked clear goal scoring opportunities. In added time of the second half, Jonas Hofmann rounded off the victory to complete a 4-0 win.
Assistant coach Frank Geideck named the following side: Tobias Sippel – Fabian Johnson, Mika Hanraths, Tony Jantschke, Oscar Wendt – Christoph Kramer, Jonas Hofmann, Florian Neuhaus – Patrick Herrmann, Alassane Plea – Josip Drmic. Geideck made five substitutions at half time, and a further three after the hour mark.
In addition to internationals Yann Sommer, Michael Lang, Nico Elvedi, Denis Zakaria (all Switzerland), Matthias Ginter (Germany) and Michaël Cuisance (France U20), captain Lars Stindl (fractured tibia) also missed out through injury and did not join the squad on tour, alongside Mamadou Doucouré and Julio Villalba. Despite being with the group in China, Raffael did not take part in the friendly due to a calf strain.
